Donald was an outstanding athlete in high school.  Following high school he enrolled in nurses training school at Poukeepsie, NY.  At the advent of WWII, Donald enlisted in the navy on September 20, 1942 as a Pharmacist Mate and was serving on Eniwetok Atoll when this picture taken above appeared in Life magazine (Donald is on the far right attending to a wounded Marine). Donald was shot and killed  on August 2, 1944, when he was trying to assist a wounded soldier on the battlefield in Gaum.
