Lucretia Martin and John Walker
Lucretia "Creasy" Martin, born 1804 in Maryland and John Walker, born 1796 in Washington Co., TN marry on November 24, 1824. Lucretia died February 12, 1863 and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery or so we think
John and Lucretia lived over the hill from the present Sulphur Springs School. I am thinking John and Lucretia lived on the south side of Bayless Rd and the Bayless lived on the north side of Bayless Rd. Today Nancy Walker Shanks lives on the land today that was Walker-Bayless land. They were charter members of the Limestone Baptist Church, Sulphur Springs, June 30, 1842
Children of Lucretia and John Walker
1. William Walker, born May 14, 1827 ; married Matilda Rogers, born 1822. He died April 22, 1883 and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery. William was the oldest child of John & Lucretia. William & Matilda were members of the Sulphur Springs Methodist Church. The 1880 Washington Co., TN Census reads:
William Walker 53 Farmer married
Matilda Walker 58 wife keeping house
Susan Mahoney 25 single, servant was living with them. She was born in Tennessee; her father born in VA and mother in TN
2. Chloe Ann, born July 31, 1829 married John Sylvester. She died November 11, 1885
Chloe's picture was from Janis Anderson who is a descendant of John and Lucretia Walker as well as Andrew and Sarah Walker
3. Susannah, born May 7, 1831 married Jesse M. Bayless. Both are buried in the Sulphur Springs Cemetery

The above pictures are Sarah Jane Bayless, daughter of Susannah Walker Bayless. The wife of William Shelton Squibb. The picture above is her father and mother, Jesse M and Susannah Walker Bayless
Another daughter of Susannah Walker Bayless was Mary Matilda shown with her husband Jacob Winton Walker with family celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Front row seated on ground is Nancy Walker with the dogs. Second row: Faye Squibb and Kaye Squibb and Oma Walker and unknown child. Third row: Lloyd Walker, Lucille Keys Walker, "Babe", Sadie and Winton {?} Fourth row: Maude Sherfey Squibb, and several unknowns. Would love to know the others in the celebration picture
4.Henry Martin Walker born September 4, 1833 married April 7, 1859 to Elmira Galloway. Elmira is buried in the Walker-Galloway Cemetery. Not sure if there was a baby buried with her or it may be that Elmira was pregnant with a baby when she died ; I have been told by my parents about a baby. Henry married secondly to Amanda Jane Bacon. Rebecca Martin, sister to Lucretia Martin Walker, is listed in the 1880 census as living with Henry Martin and Amanda Jane Bacon Walker ; however, I have never found Rebecca in other census records ; I suspect she died in the 1880's. Where did Rebecca live in 1860 and 1870?
5. Sarah Jane, born September 10, 1839 married Henry L. Keefauver February 20, 1862. Both Henry and Sarah Jane are buried in the Uriah Hunt Cemetery, Sulphur Springs. Henry and Sarah Jane Keefauver homestead
6. Anna, born 1843. She was 16 in 1860 and living with her brother William and wife Matilda. Anna died 1860 of consumption while living in their household. James Hicks 18, was a hired laborer and in 1870 he was married to a Mary E. Cox and they had a young family
7. John Walker, born 1847, never married -- The story was told that John got drunk and rode a horse through a house during the Civil War and was shot at but not sure if he died or lived? It has been said that a dispute arose over the land owned by John, which was quite a lot, from the Nathan Hale present day home to the Sylvester land, running east to west in Sulphur Springs toward Jonesborough. Did John die during the Civil War or did he live on the Bayless Rd?
The Limestone Creek from Hwy 81 to the Baptist church was known as Walker Creek and Walker cousins and brothers did settle all along this land. Eva Walker Light told Janelle Walker Warden how the cousins and brothers had a dispute over the new Sulphur Springs road being built, which just happened to go "smack dab" through their land. The old Sulphur Springs road ran along side the Limestone Creek

This house was farther down the road and built by John Keys who married Nancy Walker daughter of Andrew & Sarah Brown Walker ; he was son of Jeremiah Keys
