Walker-Galloway Cemetery located on Douglas Chapel Rd
|
Douglas Chapel Church has been remodeled in keeping with the times. The barn has been demolished making way for housing projects but the cemetery is intact and looking good for a family cemetery in 2008. Thanks to whoever is watching out for the cemetery

Oh the history the land holds
|
|
|
 |
Back of the house there use to be a log house in earlier days. This land also borders Bowser land and Sherfey land. The Sherfey boys and friends use to go swimming in a water hole located nearby. Today it is still visible from the Sulphur Springs-Gray Rd

Galloway house was the first home for Herbert C and Jessie Diehl Walker in 1923-1924 ; it was here that Jessie and baby boy Walker died with in hours of each other. Dr. William McCollum was the attending physician. Aunt Ann Walker Bacon remembers spending the night with Herbert and Jessie but half way through the night Hardin Diehl had to take Aunt Ann back home, guess she got home sick

H.M. WALKER POWDER HORN Can anyone out there identify this powder horn? Could it have been used by our Lt. Henry Martin Walker but how did it get north of Tennessee? Were powder horns used in the Civil War maybe it is from the Revolutionary War? An acquaintance sent these pictures to me thinking it might be our H M Walker
Lieut. Walker joined the Regiment at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, in December, 1863, having previously done valuable service under Captain G.W. Doughty during the siege of Knoxville, mention of which is made in the history of Captain Doughty's detachment. As First Lieutenant of Company K he was frequently in command of that company, and was a brave and active officer, always ready to perform every duty assigned him He took part in every march, skirmish and battle in which the Regiment was engaged. He was in the fights at Greeneville, Lick Creek, Carter's Depot, Tenn; Saltville, Wytheville, and Marion, Virginia, and Saulsbury, North Carolina. He was mustered out at Knoxville, Tennessee, September 5, 1865.He has resided in Washington County, Tennessee, since the war, and is still living, a prosperous and highly respected citizen Lieut. Walker was not only a good officer but a most genial comrade and friend, liked by his men and popular with the officers of the Regiment * History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee volunteer Cavalry by Samuel Scott & Samuel Angel (Ziegler Co.) c1900
Henry Martin Walker joined the Union Army after the death of his first wife and unborn baby. He had a very successful career and after the Civil War ended he returned to Washington Co., TN where he lived his entire life with his second wife, Amanda Jane Bacon and family
How sweet it is to see Amanda Jane and Henry wearing matching outfits for their portraits. The frames are just like a frame that today preserves the portrait of the oldest son John Thomas Walker taken when he was a toddler
Henry Martin married Amanda Jane Bacon March 22, 1863 and eleven children were born to them
1.Laura E. Walker December 24, 1864 ; never married
2.John Thomas Walker 21 March 1865 married Alverta A. Martin January 17, 1892
3.William Martin Walker September 4, 1870 married Minnie Anna Sherfey December 24, 1893. (2)Vertie Combs after 1944, both William and Vertie had lost spouse's and were most likely lonely ... only to separate soon after marrying and went their own ways
4.Florria Belle Walker 1872 married Charles E. Thornburg about 1894. Three children were born to Charlie and Belle; Blanche, Allie and Walker M. Thornburg. Would love to contact anyone who knows about Walker Thornburg family
5.Ida Walker March 3, 1874 ; never married, died at age 16 yrs
6.Henry Andrew Walker 18 March 1876 married Mary Adelaide Hunt December 23, 1897

8.James Arthur Walker November 16, 1883 died November 13, 1922 of Tuberculosis. He lived in the home place with Elmer and Minnie. Minnie had to take care of Arthur and she was worried that her children might get tuberculosis
9.Sarah Lucretia (Lou) Walker March 28, 1885 married James E. Ford
10.Etta Walker April 17, 1887 married (1)Martin Charles Weems (2)Arthur J. Mitchell
11.Elmer Guy Walker 20 January 1890 married Minnie Belle Jenkins
Uncle Elmer and Minnie Jenkins Walker ; after marrying they lived in an old log house. Could this have been the log house in the barn?
The above house picture was probably made between 1900 and 1918>
One of my favorite photos; Henry Andrew and Mary Adelaide Hunt Walker with their nieces and nephews, the children of Sarah Lu Walker Ford. Standing left to right; Hugh Ford, Henry A Walker, Elmer Ford, Mary Leota, Maude, Louise Ford and Mary (Addie) Walker
