HENRY MARTIN WALKER

September 3, 1833 - February 1918
John Walker and son Henry Martin Walker are found on land deeds with Isaac Galloway ; so I am thinking that John and Henry bought some of the Galloway land ; years later Henry's son John Thomas Walker was living on land out the Douglass Chapel Rd. Henry marries a Galloway girl in 1850 and he serves in Co. K with Thomas Galloway. Is it possible that John and Lucretia may be buried in the Walker-Galloway Cemetery in an unmarked grave?
Henry Martin Walker and his first wife Elmira Galloway were married April 7, 1850. By April 10 1860 Elmira was buried in the Walker-Galloway Cemetery. After much research and seeing the death record for Elmira I believe she was pregnant with their first child and died of typhoid fever before the birth of their child. I was told by family members a baby was buried there too. The record reads : Elmira Walker age 19 Female Married born Tenn died in April Domestic {cause of death} Typhoid Fever {number of days ill} 135 ; record dated June 1860

HENRY MARTIN WALKER CEMETERY was located on the Walker homestead behind the house and to the side of the barn. An excellent view of the area with a tree that James Arthur Walker could sit under and be at peace while sick with tuberculosis. It was at this time that Elmer and Minnie Jenkins Walker were living in the big homestead with Henry M a widower and son James Arthur and Aunt Minnie was so worried that her children would get tuberculosis. James Arthur died November 13, 1922 just three days short of his 39th birthday. He was buried by the tree and today we have a subdivision. There are no houses in the area but many of the rocks that were there in earlier years are not visible. Many blacks and low-income whites are buried there

Uncle Arthur Walker as he was known by family members. Here he is sometime before his death in 1922 sitting on a horse in front of Henry Andrew Walker's house ; the Walkers loved their horses

H.M. WALKER POWDER HORN Can anyone out there identify this powder horn? Could it have been used by our Lt. Henry Martin Walker but how did it get north of Tennessee? Were powder horns used in the Civil War maybe it is from the Revolutionary War? An acquaintance sent these pictures to me thinking it might be our H M Walker

Lieut. Walker joined the Regiment at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, in December, 1863, having previously done valuable service under Captain G.W. Doughty during the siege of Knoxville, mention of which is made in the history of Captain Doughty's detachment. As First Lieutenant of Company K he was frequently in command of that company, and was a brave and active officer, always ready to perform every duty assigned him He took part in every march, skirmish and battle in which the Regiment was engaged. He was in the fights at Greeneville, Lick Creek, Carter's Depot, Tenn; Saltville, Wytheville, and Marion, Virginia, and Saulsbury, North Carolina. He was mustered out at Knoxville, Tennessee, September 5, 1865.He has resided in Washington County, Tennessee, since the war, and is still living, a prosperous and highly respected citizen Lieut. Walker was not only a good officer but a most genial comrade and friend, liked by his men and popular with the officers of the Regiment * History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee volunteer Cavalry by Samuel Scott & Samuel Angel (Ziegler Co.) c1900 Henry Martin Walker joined the Union Army after the death of his first wife and unborn baby. He had a very successful career and after the Civil War ended he returned to Washington Co., TN where he lived his entire life with his second wife, Amanda Jane Bacon and family

How sweet it is to see Amanda Jane and Henry wearing matching outfits for their portraits. The frames are just like a frame that today preserves the portrait of the oldest son John Thomas Walker taken when he was a toddler

Back of the house there use to be a log house in earlier days. This land also borders Bowser land and Sherfey land. The Sherfey boys and friends use to go swimming in a water hole located nearby. Today it is still visible from the Sulphur Springs-Gray Rd

Galloway house was the first home for Herbert C and Jessie Diehl Walker in 1923-1924 ; it was here that Jessie and baby boy Walker died with in hours of each other. Dr. William McCollum was the attending physician. Aunt Ann Walker Bacon remembers spending the night with Herbert and Jessie but half way through the night Hardin Diehl had to take Aunt Ann back home, guess she got home sick
