THE FAMILY OF HAILE-HALE
MY connection to the Haile-Hale is through the following people
1... WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN8 HAILE, JR. (WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN7, GEORGE6, GEORGE5, GEORGE4, NICHOLAS3, NICHOLAS2, GEORGE1 HALE) was born February 12, 1838 in Washington County, Tennessee, and died August 30, 1909. He married great aunt LUCINDA A. HUNT August 20, 1857 in 12th District, Washington County, Tennessee, daughter of SAMUEL HUNT and ELIZABETH ELLIS. She was born 1834, and 1910 ; William & Lucinda are buried in the BARNES CEMETERY, Johnson City, Tennessee. A Union soldier's monument marks his grave
William Chamberlain Haile was a twin to John Buckingham Haile who married January 13, 1859 to Mary K, Cox {August 2, 1841} daughter of Calvin & Phoebe Cox. John B & Mary K moved from Washington Co. Tennessee about the time their relatives moved, then they traveled to Texas and settled in Kansas. John's invalid pension check was cancelled because he never picked it up. He said "It wasn't worth going after" John & Mary were members of the Christian Church like the other family members. Calvin & Phoebe Cox are buried in the Bacon Cemetery on the Elmer Walker Rd., Washington Co., Tennessee. Children of John B & Mary are: Amanda, John W., Louis G., Lovey Elen, Henry F., {source: Maude Crowe book}
November 6, 1862 - William enlisted as private in Co. H 4th Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers, mustered into service August 31, 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee, discharged July 17, 1865 on doctor's certificate of disability. Spent 9 months as a prisoner of war at the Andersonville, Georgia prison after being captured near Newman, Georgia on July 31, 1864. Paroled at Macon, Georgia May 2, 1865. spent 3 to 4 months in hospital at Andersonville. Dr. E.B. Hale, 4th Tennessee Cavlary, reported he had never seen a more emaciated body when he treated him after his imprisonment
Peter G. Range reported before the Civil War, that William C. was a very healthy person and could shoot a rifle with a dead shot holding it only in one hand; after the war he couldn't even hold a gun
William Haile/Hale and Lucinda Hunt had no children. Aunt Cindy's nephew Dr. Luke Hunt (son of James Madison Hunt, grandson of Robert Ellis Hunt) lived with her while attending school at East Tennessee Normal. I remember my mom taking my grandmother Mary Hunt Walker to see Luke. Luke has told some great stories about Aunt Cindy and how she liked to take a "nip" before retiring at night. Today some beautiful framed pictures have been found in the home
