He became a well known farmer and stockman, serving on many county and community committees. James Madison Carson was a farmer in Mills Co., Iowa. Elizabeth Jones Carson just may be kin to John Berry Jones. Maybe a niece?

In the late 1790's Hartmans came with several other pioneer families from Pennsylvania through Virginia and settled near what is now Sulphur Springs. Jonathan Hartman born in the old Homestead in 1816. He had a son Jonathan Winfield Scott Hartman born 1861 named after the Mexican War general Winfield Scott. JWS lived near the Valley View Methodist Church and his three sons Robert Garland, Cecil Calloway and Charlie Thomas Hartman all resided in the same neighborhood.
