  • Richard sent a letter to his brother Henry Martin and Hannah Marsh Jones in 1853, from Oregon. He was the first to go out at age 17. He also went to the Gold rush in CA where he made a little money enough to buy some land in Lane co. 300 acres for $600.00 -- Richard and Alice are buried in Lane Co., Eugene, OR

    Jane Walker born abt. 1789 in Montgomery Co., VA and Joseph Hartman, Jr born 1781 in Virginia married and lived their entire life in Washington Co., TN


    In the late 1790's Hartmans came with several other pioneer families from Pennsylvania through Virginia and settled near what is now Sulphur Springs. Jonathan Hartman born in the old Homestead in 1816. He had a son Jonathan Winfield Scott Hartman born 1861 named after the Mexican War general Winfield Scott. JWS lived near the Valley View Methodist Church and his three sons Robert Garland, Cecil Calloway and Charlie Thomas Hartman all resided in the same neighborhood. Mary,1777 married a Beals. Levi,1779 married a Depew. Joseph,1781 married Jane (Jennie) Walker. Rachel,1783 married a Beals. John,1787 married a Depew. Marshall,November 9, 1788 in VA-June 17, 1864 died in Mosheim, TN may have been married three times to Margaret Lauchner, Susannah Hull and Sarah Squibb. Elizabeth, 1791 married a Depew
