WILLIAM ELLIS JR

William Ellis Jr born abt 1775 in (Rowan Co) North Carolina son of William and Martha Ellis was one of the older sons. He married to Hannah Davis born abt 1779 and daughter of Nathaniel Davis born bef 1768 in Virginia who was residing in Carter Co., Tennessee. William and Hannah married about 1805. William Jr had purchased land in Carter Co., Tennessee on August 21, 1801. William Jr sold part of his property in Carter Co., to his brother John Ellis on October 26, 1820 and the remainder of the land was sold about 1828 The John Ellis property remained in the family until 1919. It is believed that William and Hannah moved to Marion Co., Tennessee in the late 1820's. William Jr had vast holdings of land on the Tennessee River in Marion County, Tennessee. William Jr died about 1835 in Marion Co., Tennessee living a widow Hannah. Hannah Davis Ellis was listed in 1850 and 1860 with possibly her father Nathaniel Davis living near her. My source for William Jr is Alfred Ellis a direct descendant of William Ellis Jr

  • Clark and William Ellis Jr. both had large families and many of their descendants are still living in Sequatchie Valley area of Tennessee today. The land that William Ellis Jr owned on the Tennessee River in Marion Co., Tennessee is now covered by the Nicka Jack Reservoir. R. L Ellis (1918-1899) worked on this project during the early 1960's. R.L. was the son of Alfred "Bud" Ellis and a great grandson of James Ellis who owned property here before moving to DeKalb County, Alabama around 1841

An interesting note from Alfred Ellis: "According to tradition passed down in my grandfather Alfred (Bud)'s family, Jim (James) Ellis lived on the land beside Sand Mountain and near the cave which came to be known as "Ellis Cave" and now referred to as Sequoyah Caverns. It is known that the cave and land surrounding the Cave came to be owned by Abner “Dock” Ellis by 1890 homestead. Jim (James) and Polly (Mary) Phillips Ellis moved here ca. 1841. Alfred Ellis was born here in 1843. He was the first Ellis to be born in Dekalb County, Alabama and he was named for his aunt Aile's husband, Captain Alfred Long. Alfred Ellis later married Nathaniel Painter's granddaughter Margaret Evaline Painter, a daughter of James Painter. Abner, the last son born in Dekalb County, was named in honor of his mother Mary's brother, Abner Phillips. Alfred would later name his youngest child (Alcie Ellis Shankles) after his aunt Alcie (Aile) Long, who in turn had probably been named after her aunt Alcie (Aile/Alsey) Gresham listed in the 1809 Ellis will"

  • James Ellis enrolled into the volunteer regiment September of 1863. He was 57 years old and enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant! It was a common practice by the recruiters to record the younger age (usually “44”). All new recruits were taken to Stevenson, Alabama for processing. James was put in a holding barracks with about 60,000 other recruits and died less than 3 months after enlisting-December 6, 1863. Records list his death as being caused by camp diarrhea and list the place he died as field hospital- Stevenson, Alabama. This building is still standing today and is used as a private residence-the Rudder Home. Since he died early in the war and the location of his grave was probably marked with a wooden headboard identified only with paint, it is likely that James Ellis was exhumed and reinterred in the cemetery at Chickamauga as an unknown soldier. • Mary (Polly) Phillips Ellis, not only lost her husband, but two sons as well. Her son James, Jr. had joined Malone's confederate regiment. It is possible that James, Jr. was conscripted into confederate service and was not able to change over into the Union Army as many of the other young men in the area had done. Of course it is also possible that he supported the Confederate cause. According to Annie Young, a granddaughter of Mary Ann Missina (Missy) Ellis Gifford, he died in a prisoner of war camp in Ohio of Pneumonia. He left one son, William, and a widow Nancy York Ellis

  • Another son was Jacob (Jake). He died on the Nashville-Chattanooga RR at Whitesides, Tennessee of camp diarhea on the 7th day of July 1864. He was also a member of Captain Long's Company C, Vidette. According to records, Jacob was waited upon in death by Alexander Painter and Washington D. Crowe, other members of the Company C. Jacob was survived by his wife Leana Jane Blansett Ellis, and a small son George Washington Ellis. Mary's oldest son, William, served in this unit also, but he survived

  • James and Mary Phillips Ellis’ son Alfred was the last to enlist. He was twenty old when he joined Captain Jordan's Company G, First Independent Vidette Cavalry Volunteers on January 1, 1864. Alfred was described as being 20 years old, 6 feet, 1 inches tall, having a fair complexion and grey eyes. He was to serve one year but his regiment was mustered out on the 10th day of June 1864 by order of the Secretary of War(there came to be some question as to the legality of this volunteer regiment since men from more than one state were in this organization). On the thirteenth day of March 1865, Alfred enrolled in Company E Ninth Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry. While in the Ninth Illinois, he had duty at Huntville and Florence, Alabama, Eastport, Miss., and Gravelly Springs, Ala., till June. The regiment moved to Iuka, Miss., June 23 and on to Montgomery and Selma, Ala., and thence to Gainesville on August 20. The regiment had duty in the District of Montgomery, Ala., till October. The regiment was mustered at Selma, Alabama on the 31st day of October since the war was over and their services were no longer needed

  • The only son of James and Mary that did not serve in the Civil War was their youngest son Abner. He may have been too young for service. The two other minor children still at home when husband James enlisted in September 1863- Sarah, ten years old, and Mary Ann Missina (Missy), seven
