The late Mr James Robertson of Puerua was one of the early settlers of the Clutha district. He was a native of Strathardell, Perthshire Scotland born 24th July 1813 but resided from his youth in Glenshee. When the royal family used to pass through the Highlands for their stay at Balmoral Castle he was invariable one of those who had the pleasure of piloting them over those dangrous mountain roads the Cairnwall, etc. He also drove the despatch with the royal mail from Percy over the Cairnwall to Braemar. At the time of the Disruption he joined the Free Church and of course was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Like many other men half a century ago seeing a fairly large family growing up around him he sailed for New Zealand in the ship Southern Cross in November 1855 arriving at Dunedin in February 1856 From Dunedin he and his family went to the Clutha where his wife's brother the late Mr Peter Ayson of Corrydon Warepa had taken up land three years previously. By Mr. Ayson's influence the subject of this notice and and his eldest son a lad of 14 years got engagements as shepherds with the late Mr Kettle who had a sheep run at Kaihiku and who was at one time chief surveyor. After serving Mr. Kettle for three years Mr. Robertson took up land at Puerua Bush where he has resided ever since a period of 43 years. He leaves a widow aged 92 years, four sons and two daughters. He enjoyed excellent health up to a few months ago when old age began to tell its tale. He passed away very quietly at 5 o'clock on Sunday evening in his eighty ninth year. --Leader-
