HUNT-MARTIN CEMETERY

Hunt-Martin Cemetery is located on the west side of Buffalo Ridge and off the Shadden Road. Today we have the Fossil Museum situated on a corner of the Hunt-Martin property. The land was originally Jesse Hunt who settled on Buffalo Ridge about 1790 and lived there until about 1870 or 1880. December 1850 Henry A. and Matilda Brown Martin had moved from near Locust Mount to Buffalo Ridge and bought the Peter Barry house. Samuel M Hunt had built a house on Jesse Hunt land making the Hunt and Martin families neighbors with some of their children marrying. After Samuel Hunt died the estate was dispersed and John Alexander Calhoun Martin son of Henry A Martin had bought the Hunt house where he also ran a store. Several of the families near Locust Mount also had moved to the Buffalo Ridge area...did they realize back then that Gray would someday be a town? With Martin and Hunt siblings intermarrying it made sense to have a family cemetery among the two families. Today we find the Martin family buried on the west side of the cemetery and the Hunt family on the east side of the cemetery

ROBERT ELLIS HUNT AND MARY EMMALINE MARTIN HUNT. Robert Ellis Hunt oldest son of Samuel M & Elizabeth Ellis Hunt. Mary Emmaline the daughter of Henry A & Matilda Brown Martin and sister to John C Martin who bought the Samuel Hunt house. I am most certain there was another tombstone near Robert & Elizabeth for Samuel & Elizabeth Ellis Hunt...but what happened? Also an Amanda Hunt stone was there as well? Is this the Amanda Hunt listed in the 1850 census for Samuel & Elizabeth Hunt family?

Jesse and William are the sons of George and Lutitia E. Hunt Cox. Jessee and William were twins and their birth must have been a hardship on Lutitia causing mother and sons to die. William and Jessee were named for their grandfathers; William Cox and Jesse Hunt. Recently found that Lutitia had a daughter Sarah who was the first born, she married a Hale and has descendants living in Tennessee
