| Llantwit Major. I can now offer look ups in the registers of Bethesda'r Fro Independent Church, Boverton, Llantwit Major for baptisms 1798 to 1838. In 1797 there was a divergence of opinion between members of the congregation of the old established Independant Church at Aberthin, near Cowbridge, and a part of the congregation broke away and set up their own Church initially in a cottage at Burton in Penmark, and then in a house in Llanblethian owned by Thomas Redwood of Cowbridge. Redwood's wife had inherited Orchard House, Boverton from her uncle and the Redwoods gave a piece of land from their Boverton house for the building of a new Church for the ex members from Aberthin. This became Bethesda'r Fro. The register of baptisms starts in 1798 with some which took place at Burton. Subsequent entries relate to baptisms at Bethesda itself, at Burton and at other locations. The families baptising children are mainly from Llantwit Major, Penmark, St.Athan, Flemingston & Peterston-super-Ely and many of the parents were members of the original "breakaway" group. | Bob Sanders | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
