Roland McDonald Hill was born on 26 Jul 1888 at Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Francis Isaac Hill and Catherine Elizabeth MacDonald. He was baptized at Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at St. Mary's Church.3 He married Louisa Pearce, daughter of Joseph Howell Pearce and Elizabeth Wooldridge, on 3 Jul 1918 at Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.4 Roland McDonald Hill died on 16 Sep 1966 at Lowell General Hospital, Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 78 of Acute Cholecystiitis.5 He was interred on 19 Sep 1966 at Oakland Cemetery, on Mamoth Road, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.6,5
When his mother died Roland and his three brothers were raised by his grandmother, Eliza Peabody Hill and her unmarried daughter Emma Hill.

He worked as an engineer and operated and maintained cranes and equipment at a granite quarry operated by H. E. Fletcher Company in Westford, Massachusetts.3,5 He resided with Eliza at Mammoth Road, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1900.7 Wnen Roland was about 13 or 14 he was sent to work at his uncle Fred Hill's wood lot. He was not sent to school for fear of catching tuiberculosis. It was genearally believed that being outside in the fresh air would prevent catching the disease.8 He was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts during World War I. (The 1930 census indicates he was in the military during World War I.).9,10 Roland McDonald Hill and Louisa Pearce lived at 586 Lakeview Avenue, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1920.11 Roland and Louisa rented in several locations in Dracut. First on Riverside Street, until a bar moved in next door. Then they moved to School Street. He built the house at 2 Hurley Avenue around 1950. All of their daughters went to the Parker Avenue elementary school.12 Roland McDonald Hill lived at the corner of Lakeview and Parker Avenues, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, early in 1921.13 Before 1925, when Roland went to work at the Fletcher Granite Quarry on Route 40 in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, they moved a house on Riverside Drive. The house was owned by the owner of the quarry (Mr. Cogger?). The rent was $30 a month (Rowena was the one who usually delivered the rent.).3 He and Louisa Pearce lived at 487 Riverside Street, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1930.10 During the depression, they closed off the upstairs of the house to save heat, and moved beds to the first floor. The house on Riverside Street had a front hall, a parlor and a kitchen on the first floor, with a small pantry off the kitchen.14 Roland McDonald Hill appears in a group photo a 1940 at Warner, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He and Louisa Pearce lived at 71 School Street, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1945.15 Roland retired from Fletcher's in the early 1950's after being involved in an accident in which the crane he operated tipped over at the quarry.

He corresponded for a while with a cousin named Cassie (Catherine) McDonald who lived in Canada. She moved to western Canada and died a few years before Roland died.16
