McKewen Families

Home Up Henry David Waldock McKewen Families Charles & Rose Waldock George & Eliza Waldock Angel Family

The two eldest daughters of William Marriott Waldock & Frances Roberts, Frances Lucy and Sarah Anne, married brothers John and William Greer McKewen respectively.  John & William both migrated from Northern Ireland as did their brothers Robert & Thomas McKewen (starring on the right).  On the shipping records their surnames were recorded as McKeown and McEwan but in Australia they adopted 'McKewen'.

Initially all four McKewen brothers took up leases along Glenbar Road near Tiaro in 1868.  Robert moved first, selling his share to William in 1873.

On 20 April 1874 John & William set up a store in Tiaro.  In 1881 William bought Ashley's Bright Hotel & Store in Kilkivan, and moved there with his family.  He sold his share of the Tiaro shop to John in 1883.  John ran the Tiaro store until he retired to Rockhampton in 1910.  William Greer McKewen & family prospered in Kilkivan owning hotels, stores and several properties.  "Wongella" became the home property until sold in the mid 1950s.
