NOTE---- was Passed on the information from Sylverster Wakenight that we came from Germany and that the name was origannaly spelled Weichneicht. I have ran across this name is several other incindences, but with the way records were kept way back it is hadd to know what was a misspelling and what was diffrent name altogether. I have no dought we are from Germany. The problem is finding Daniel's father for lack of record keeping in the early years.

General Notes: Daniel Wakenight
Mt. Morris Times March 15, 1923:
Died on a Tuesday morning 3-6-1923 reaching the ag
e of 92 yrs 5 mths and 18 days, Mr Wakenight being of a family of 7. He spent most of his boyhood out in Washington Co. MD. When he reached young manhood, he gained a desire to move out to the Western frontier, so he, with others moved as far West as Clark Co. OH. Here he met Lydia Kerns, with whom in 1855 he was united in Marriage. After their marriage they decided to move farther west. Together with others they started with horses and wagons, coming to Ogle Co, IL, settling in what is now called Pine Creek TWP, IL. In the year 1865, both Mr. and Mrs. Wakenight joined the United Brethren Church, where he held his membership until the time of his death. After having lived near Pine Creek for a period of time they then moved to the old homestead, where he and Mrs. Wakenight shared the joys and sorrows of life together.
In moving to this community Mr. and Mrs. Wakenight made the Church their place of worship, attending very faithfully. Their happy union was blessed with four children, John, Jacob, Cora, and Anna of whom Jacob and Cora have preceded their father in Death. Mrs. Wakenight departed this life on 1-29-1909. His funeral was held on Thursday, 3-8-1923 at the North Grove Evangelical Church, the Rev. Sienvisen of Forreston, preaching the funeral sermon.
Thus we find that neighbor Wakenight leaves to mourn his loss, his Son John, his Daughter Mrs. Anna Mayer, seven Grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a host of Friends. His Pall bearers were his six nephews: George A Gaffin, John D Croft, Edward Potter, Ernest and Elmer Wolf, and Frederick Gaffin, who peacefully laid him to rest beside his wife in the Cemetery adjoining the Church.

General Notes: SUPPOSED ELOPERS ARE DEAD
-----
Bernice (BTW the family pronounced this Bur'nis, rather than today's
Ber-niece') Berck and Ed. Parker Found in Old Straw Stack on Iwanski Farm
Southwest of St. Paul - Two 32-Caliber Bullets Ended Lives of Discontended
Ones.
----
Shortly before noon Wednesday, six days after Bernice Berck and Edwin
Parker had disappeared from this city, supposedly to get secretly married,
the dead bodies of the two young people were found in an old wheat straw
stack on the John Iwanski farm, five miles southwest of St. Paul. Miss
Berck had a bullet hole in her right temple, as also did Mr. Parker. A
32-caliber revolver, having two chambers empty, was found on young Parker's
body, less than inch from his right hand. Mr. Iwanski, his neighbor, Fred
Stewart, and the latter's son, Ray, were the first to see the dead bodies.
Mr. Iwanski tells the story of the finding something like this: "I was
out, looking over my wheat field and was walking a few rods of the old straw
stack, being on the south side. I noticed something red in a low place on
the side of the stack. At the time there was in my mind a slight suspicion
that it might be the bodies of these two young people as so much had been
said about their mysterious disappearance and the possibility of their
having committed suicide. On second thought, however, I supposed it was a
calf or some other animal that had strayed to the stack and had died there.
I then went to the Fred Stewart farm home, a quarter of a mile distant, and
told Mr. Stewart and his son what I had seen. The three of us then went out
to the stack. Ray was a little in advance of his father and myself. He got
a half glimpse at the objects in the stack, then came back and told us he
thought it was a tramp taking a sleep. When we neared the stack Mr. Stewart
called out several times, but there was no response. We then decided to
make an investigation. You might know how we felt upon making the
discovery."
The two men at once got into communication with authorities here, and in
less than hour (sic) Undertaker Christensen, Sheriff Atwood, Coroner Dobry,
Dr. Jester, and about 100 people from this city were at the Iwanski farm.
The bodies were put in a car to be brought to town, arriving here about
2:45. They were taken to C.J. Christensen's undertaking parlors to be
prepared for burial.
The Phonograph editor was among the many curious people to go out to see
the bodies of the two young people. It was a sight too ghastly to look upon
and far too horrible for descrition.
The finding of Miss Berck and Mr. Parker clears up the mystery of their
whereabouts after their sudden and unexpected disappearance. Early last
Thursday morning when the news spread that they had disappeared several
parties in company with Marshal Higley made a preliminary search. Several
of the nearby towns were notified. No real search was made until Sunday
when all the vacant houses in the city were visited and gone thru thoroly
(sic). There was a feeling that the young people had gone, no one could
venture even a safe guess, as to where, to get married, and that they had
succeeded in so doing. No one knew exactly how much money they had taken
with them. Several of the prominent business men about town ventured the
guess that unless they had taken much money the chances were that they had
committed suicide. It was at first supposed they had left town in a car,
but this theory soon fell thru because all the auto liverymen and other
drivers could give no information along that line. Early this week M.A.
Bailey stated that he had noticed the tracks of a man and woman in a road
out of town south. He gave little thought to the same, however, until
Tuesday. There was some talk then of trying to follow the tracks and to
find where they led to. Yesterday morning anothehr (sic) and more thoro
(sic) search of the city was planned, the same to be made that afternoon.
The call from Stewart and Mr. Iwanski, of course made this second search
unnecessary.
We learn that when Miss Berck left her home last Wednesday evening she
bade her mother good-bye and told her that she thought she would never see
her again. It is also stated that she took along the revolver with which
they were killed.
The funerals were held from the respective homes this morning; that of
Edwin Parker was held at ten o'clock, while that of Miss Berck was held at
twelve. She was buried at Dannebrog.

There is a Wakenight Family Bible. Sylvester had the Bible brought back from Nebraska. His son Lloyd then had it- now his son James has it- he lives near White Pines Park.

Was accidentally shot by cousin Bert Wakenight leaving a scar on his left middle area, but survived without complications-- Mt. Morris Times 10-31-1900

On Sunday afternoon, Sylvester Wakenight was the victim of an accidental shot from a revolver in the hands of his cousin, Bert Wakenight. The two young men had gone to Pine Creek with a 32 caliber revolver, in order to test their skill at shooting at a mark. They selected a favorite place near the old sawmill and put up a target at which they discharged four bullets. The fifth cartridge snapped, and Sylvester went to the target for the purpose of seeing how near the leaded messenger had come to the bulls' eye. His cousin stood and pulled the trigger on the refractory bullet when all at once it went off and entered the left side of Sylvester, who had his back toward the shooter.
The bullet entered his left side form the back, and continued its course accidental it deflected by a rib. As soon as Bert seen what injury he had inflicted upon his cousin he rushed to his assistance.
Sylvester was able to walk to the home of his Uncle, Samuel Wakenight, about half a mile distant, and from there he was removed to his home at this place. Dr. McCosh was summoned and probed for the bullet, but was not able to locate it. Although the injury is in a visable part of the body, it is not thought that any serious results will follow.

General Notes: Dear Alta,

You will think I'm a great one to be so long answering y
our nice letter but, I keep pretty busy what with Alice here and now my son John is staying with us, as he has separated with Geneva and has to find a place when things are all settled, but right now I am glad he wants to stay here in Searcy.
They should have done this a long time ago and everyone would have been better off. Of course there was the children and perhaps that was one of the reasons he stayed on, but now we are doing the best we can to make him comfortable and he appreciates it. Besides he is lots of company and help. I don't have a car now and couldn't drive it if I did, so he helps out that way, and we go on short trips to places of interest and Alice enjoys that as much of the time, she just sits. She writes letters to her family, crochets a lot, and reads. We went to the orchard and picked peaches and she peeled alot while I got them sliced and ready for the freezer. I canned alot and made preserves. Our garden was a disappointment, but we had a lot of corn and beans and tomatoes to eat, but none to put up for the winter. My late tomatoes are nice and some of the beans lived.
Well I'm sending Sylvester's letter and quite a bit of data he has gotten up. Bless his heart he has a good memory for his age. The family Bible that he spoke of was in my folks home until one time when he, his son Lloyd, and wife Mary, came thru Ark. and stopped to see Alice and David at Decatur and during the course of their visit she got out the old Bible which by that time was beginning to get rather weather beaten and ect. Lloyd acted like he would be rather proud to take it for rebinding, so she gave it to him under those circumstances then he and Mary were killed in that car wreck and not know the deal his son by a former marriage took it along with what else of his folks belongings and when Alice's daughter Frances wrote for it, he wouldn't give it up. She had much data on "Our family tree" and needed it for what it held rather than have to do so much research. So if Sylvester don't know about this I will explain everything to him not that it would make any difference to him, but you might find it helpful,
Uncle Oscar is dead , long ago, his wife was Susan Baier, my mothers sister's girl, (Aunt Regina) they lived at Boelus as did we and grandfather and G.mother W.
I think the horses were of Morgan breed, at least that was the kind my dad had and they were from England. My dad told us he was Scotch Irish and German. The name Wakenight was German having been spelled originally Weichneicht. Dad and Mom lived on a farm adjoining G. fathers and they raised thorough bred Poland China hogs. He use to take them to fairs and took blue ribbons several times. Your sister Mae, along with your father and mother visited them, and Alice used to write letters to Mae after she went home.
I saw Aunt Jane at Pauline's there in Omaha when she lived on A street. Jake and one of his son's was there too, so was Edith. Mama has been to Boelus to visit Aunt Regina and we , my bro, Orville and Delbert and I left left from here and brought her home.
Delbert and Odeen are still quite active thou of course at their age are getting childish. he still drives his old truck to do his gro. shopping and other chores. I'm scared for him as his vision isn't good at all. He says" They get out of my way and that's how he turns off our concern. John forbade me ever riding with him and I take his advise. Well it's my bed time and tomorrow is the day for Alice to go to her Dr. so guess I'll hit the hay. Hope you and yours gets alot of this "tree" taken care of . Ha Ha. It's too expensive of a hobby for me if it's done thoroughly. Write, Love, Blanche and Alice

Cousand's Blanch and Alta, Delbert and Odean. as well as their family, in answer to the large fat letter that you, Blanch sent me a few weeks ago. I was glad to get it. I am still navigation on my own power but not very fast. We have a real dry spell here now I don't know when it was so dry and hot the grass is burning up, and I haven't mowed the lawn in three weeks so you can know what it done to the garden. I am still living along, but my daughter Nellie comes in everyday except Saturday and Sunday. Before 1920 there was no hospital in White County. Mrs. O.C. Wakenight (who was Searcy's only graduate nurse at the time), Dr. A.G. Harrison, and Dr. S.T. Tapscott established the Wakenight Sanitarium in 1920 and the two physicians asked her if she would start taking patients into her home. It struggled and was never very successful, although in 1927 they recorded more than 300 surgeries in the facility. It was sold to Dr. Porter Rodgers in 1943.

Note on Wakenight Sanitarium was described as a five room house. They built on to it. This was described in a note about Mrs. Ethel Bailey Shumpourd who worked there as a cook untill Mrs. Wakenight offered her a housekeeping position when they expanded. After Dr. Rogers bought it she continued to work there.

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
And knew that you would never get well on earth again.
He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes,
He whispered to you "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly.
When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain,
We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again.
You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide,
You live on through your children, you're always by our side.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Love you very much mom, and don't worry we know you are always watching over us.

We little knew that morning
that God was going to call your name
In life we loved you dearly
in death we do the same

It broke our hearts to lose you
but you did not go alone
For part of us went with you
the day God called you home

You left us tender memories
your love will be our guide
And though we cannot see you
you are always by our side

Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same
But as God calls us one by one
the chain will link again

E-mail sent to me that was just touching.
Dear Ms. Strow,

I played basketball at Dekalb High School in the early 1970’s and was lucky enough to have had Ramer (Ramar? – I always thought it was that spelling) as my varsity basketball coach.

I just wanted you to know that I had plenty of experiences with many coaches, not all of them good, but Coach Wakenight was by far the best coach I ever had and, more importantly, I was extremely impressed by his integrity. He was a straight shooter who really cared about the students he encountered, and he went out of his way to help if necessary. I always knew that whatever advice he gave me, and he did give me plenty outside of basketball, I could feel that I would be doing the right thing by following that advice. If you asked me today who was the person I most respected from my almost 20 years in school, he would top the list.

My memories of him (I can still remember what he looked like) will always be with me – which I supposed is clearly verified by the fact that I have periodically looked on the internet to see if I could find what had happened to him in recent years, including today, after 35+ years. I was certainly sad to see that he had passed away almost 10 years ago.
