Descendants and Ancestors of David Sr Weatherly
The Mystery of David Sr Weatherly...
Yes, a bit of mystery surrounds the life of David Sr Weatherly of Berwick-upon-Tweed, who came to the United States at the end of the eighteenth century - a master clock and watch -maker and a descendant of the same. He was also a high-ranking executive in the emerging railroad industry of Pennsylvania. Once, on a trip around 1840, he stopped at Black Creek, in what is now Carbon County. He offered the town a spectacular clock if the people would rename their town after him. When he left, it was no longer Black Creek - but Weatherly, Pennsylvania - yet the town remained without its clock, and they never saw him leave!
Why did he go - and where? He was next discovered in 1850 in the Federal Census taken at Philadelphia - the home of much of his remaining family. He would die about a year later.
Did he sense this? Is this why he returned without fulfilling his promise? Because he knew he was going to die and wanted to be with his loved ones? It remains to be discovered.
