Martin Lawyer, so far the earliest
identified ancestor of this family, was born in Hanover, Germany and settled on
a farm in Harford County, Maryland. Brothers Casper and Philip Lawyer both
show up in the 1800 census of Frederick County, Maryland in Westminster District
#5. This area later became Carroll County. Casper's family consisted
then of 2 males under 10, 1 male age 16-26, 2 males age 26-45, 2 females under
10 and 1 female age 26-45. Philip's family consisted then of 1 male under
10, 1 male age 10-16, 1 male age 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female age 1-16, 1
female age 16-26 and 1 other free person. Carroll County was formed in
1837 from parts of Frederick and Baltimore Counties. Silver Run, where
many of the Lawyers lived, is right on the line of the old Frederick/Baltimore
Counties, so it is likely that the families stayed put and the county lines
moved around them.
