Abraham E. Hamby/Elizabeth Chitwood


Abraham E. Hamby, son of Henry and Sarah "Cross" Hamby was (17 Jun 1822 - 25 Feb 1881) married Elizabeth Chitwood (19 Sep 1827 - 11 Sep 1897). They were married 17 Mar 1849 in Campbell CO, TN.
Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Rachel "Hamby" Chitwood. William Chitwood b.1787; son of James b. 1751; son of Richard b. 1722; son of Matthias Chitwood b. 1681.

Abe was a farmer in what is now Scott CO, TN until after the Civil War when they moved to Whitley County, Kentucky near the community of Nevisdale, east of Williamsburg. After Abe died, Elizabeth applied for a widow's pension but was denied. They are both buried at the Rose Cemetery, Nevisdale, KY.

During the War, Abe enrolled in the Tennessee National Guard, "A" Company at Chitwood, TN (Now Winfield). The National Guard was formed to protect property from the Confederate soldiers and also to help the Union soldiers as they moved south.

Abe was mustered out on 14 Dec 1863 at Clinton, TN and reenlisted the same day. No records are available to show his final separation from the Service.

Rachel Hamby/William Chitwood


William R. Chitwood (16 Feb 1787NC - 29 Jun 1871TN) was the sixth child of James Chitwood b. 1751VA; son of Richard Chitwood b. 1722VA; son of Matthais Chitwood b. 1681ENG.

William was first married to Sarah Reed, the daughter of John Reed. His second wife was Rachel Hamby who was born 24 Aug 1809. Rachel's parents are unknown. It is believed she is closely related to Henry Hamby but she is too old to be a daughter since Henry and Sarah were not married until 1810.

William is buried in Nim Angel Cemetery on Jellico Creek. Sarah is buried in Concord Cemetery near Williamsburg, KY

Nancy Hamby/James Chitwood

Nancy Hamby, the third child of Henry and Sarah "Cross" Hamby, was born in Wilkes CO, North Carolina. She married John H. Chitwood in Scott CO, Tennessee and is buried at the Davis Baker Cemetery, Pleasant Grove Community, near Winfield, Tennessee.

John enlisted as a private in the Union army in October 1861 at Camp Robertson, Kentucky, and was taken as a prisoner of war at Rogersville, Tennessee on 6 November 1863. He died 24 April 1864 in prison and is buried at the National Cemetery, Andersonville, Georgia.

John was the first child of Daniel b. 1794; son of James b. 1751; son of Richard b. 1722; son of Matthais b. 1681.
