Levi Riegel
1836-1866

Levi Riegel entered into service on February 6, 1862 when he was 25 years old. He mustered into Company E of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On February 25, 1862 he was appointed to Sergeant. On September 15, 1862, he was captured and paroled at Harper's Ferry. As a result, he was mustered out with the Company on November 10, 1862.

This photo, from a cased sixth-plate tintype taken on November 24, 1864 in Natchez, Mississippi, shows U.S. Navy Landman Levi Riegel in uniform. In a letter home to his wife Susan the same day, Levi states that he thought that this was a poor "likeness" of himself, as he now weighed 153 pounds, 15 pounds heavier than when he enlisted.
