Reuben Underwood

Reuben Underwood was born May 1842 in Clinton County or Washington County, Ohio. He enrolled in the Civil War on May 25, 1861 to serve three years. He mustered in as a private of Captain George Wright’s Company B of the 14th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. His enlistment papers indicated that he was a carpenter, 22 years old, and 6 feet tall. He also was said to have blue eyes, a light complexion, and red hair. He was honorably discharged from the service on June 18, 1864 in Springfield, Illinois.

On October 12, 1864, he reenlisted for a one year period. He mustered in as a private of Captain Earl A. Cranston’s Company F of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. At the time of this second enlistment, he was listed as a farmer. He mustered out with his Company on July 28, 1865 at Delaney House, D.C.

Several years after the Civil War, Reuben married. He married Emily U. Hughes on November 18, 1869 in Ellsworth County, Kansas. Reuben was residing in McPherson County, Kansas at the time. Nine children were born to this union: John L. in 1870, Annie E. in 1871, Newton C. in 1874, Reuben C. in 1876, Ellis Hughes in 1880, Arthur David in 1882, Eunice E. in 1886, Lila L. in 1889, and Mabel in 1893.

Sometime between 1882 and 1889, Reuben and his family moved to Washington. In 1900, he was listed on the census as residing in Yakima City (Union Gap), Yakima County, Washington and having the occupation of a mailcarrier.
