1836-1918

Thomas Elijah Rhine was born April 19, 1836 in Guernsey County, Ohio. On February 27, 1864, when he was 27 years old, he entered into service. He signed up to serve three years during the Civil War and became a private in Company D of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He mustered out with his Company on July 28, 1865.

Since the days of the Civil War, he followed the vocation of a blacksmith and was generally known throughout the country as a man of remarkable physical strength. He also made violins and was involved with the construction of the courthouse in Cambridge, Ohio. He lived in Guernsey County practically all of his life, and was a member of the Quaker City Christian Church.

On April 11, 1856, he married Lucinda Clary, the daughter of Isaac and Aseneth Harvey. To this union, nine children were born: Francis (Lucinda) who married Harry C. Beymer, John W., James Taylor, Isaac N., Enoch Bryan, Selesta who died in infancy, Elmer Franklin, Charles, and Rosa C. who married W. Cort Bryant.

In 1918, about one year after his wife passed away, Thomas Elijah visited his son, Charles Rhine, of Foster Avenue in Cambridge, Ohio. On February 3, 1918, he was suddenly stricken and died from heart trouble at the home of his son. He was eighty-two years old. Lucinda and Thomas Elijah Rhine are buried together in Quaker City, Ohio.

Thomas Elijah Rhine was survived by the following children: Elmer and Charles, of Cambridge; John, of California; James, of Akron, Ohio; Isaac, of Missouri; Bryan, of Iowa; Mrs. W. C. Bryant of Columbus, Ohio; and Mrs. Harry Beymer of Iowa. One sister, Mrs. Kate Boetcher, of near Marietta also survives.
