John Barkalow Mendenhall was born May 1, 1841 in Jay County, Indiana to Williston T. Mendenhall and Mary Ann Barkalow. John enrolled into the Civil War on November 15, 1861 for a one year period. He was 20 years old and mustered into Company F of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. On December 1, 1861, he was promoted to a sergeant. He was a ship’s cook on the gunboat, Ouichata and was mustered out with the Company on November 10, 1862.
Several years after being discharged from the service, John married. He married Cassie Ann "Babb" Peck on April 16, 1867 in Blackford County, Indiana. Cassie was the daughter of Samuel Peck and Susannah Shidler. John was Cassie’s second husband, her first husband having died in the Civil War. Three children were born to the union of John and Cassie: Charles Williston in 1867, William Fourman in 1873, and Ralph Leon in 1875. John was listed as a blacksmith when he resided in Dunkirk, Indiana.
In 1911, his wife, Cassie, died in Jay County, Indiana. A couple of years later, John remarried. On March 12, 1913, John married his second wife, Sarah Couse, in Jay County, Indiana. Almost six years later, John Barkalow Mendenhall died. He died January 27, 1919 in Dunkirk, Indiana.
