Samuel Mark Company H 1840-1893

Samuel Mark was born September 27, 1840 to Jonathan Mark and Susannah Plougher. He had nine siblings, having six brothers (Joseph, John, David B., James B., Alfred H., and Isaac Newton) and three sisters (Mary, Margaret, and Mary Elizabeth).
On August 6, 1862, Samuel enlisted into the Civil War for a period of seven months. He was 21 years old when he mustered in as a private to Company H of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Unfortunately, on September 15, 1862, he was captured at Harper's Ferry. As a result, he was paroled and mustered out with the Company on November 10, 1862.
Only four months after being discharged, Samuel married Frances A. Baughan, the daughter of William Baughan and Katherine Bush. Samuel and Frances were married March 17, 1863 in Minster. To this union, seven children were born: Rose in 1864, Armanda, Lucy in 1868, Olive, Ada in 1875, Georgianna in 1878, and Daisy in 1880.
Samuel's military service wasn't over, however. After only being married one year, he reenlisted and mustered in with Company F of the 168th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in May 1864. He was a 2nd Lieutenant. In June 1864, Samuel was captured by the enemy a second time. This time it was by Morgan near Cynthiana, Kentucky.
After being discharged from the service, Samuel returned to Ohio and, in September 1864, he and his family moved to Marion County, Iowa. He farmed for twelve years and then purchased eighty acres in Buena Vista Township, Jasper County, Iowa.
Samuel Mark continued to suffer from heart trouble throughout the remainder of his life. It was due to exhaustion from a forced march while a captive of Morgan. He eventually died December 5, 1893.
