He was a farmer. Both marriages took place in Owen Co., Ind. He died in Richland Co., Ill. He and Synthia are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. After his death, she married Elias Ridgley Dec 24, 1864.

It is believed that he had 2 brothers, William and Jeptha. Records in Owen Co., Ind. show that a William Handley married Ann Barbara Mercer Feb 21, 1830 and a Jeptha Handley married Sarah A. Mercer Feb 27, 1828. These two men would be in the same age bracket as Jesse and beings all were married in Owen Co., Ind. within 3 years of each other, it would lead to believe that they were brothers.

He was born in Coles Co., Ill., the son of Alfred Ridgley and Elizabeth Inyart. They were married in Lawrence Co., Ill. and are both buried in Ridgley Cemetery. They lived 10 miles south of Sumner, Ill. on land he and inherited thru his grandfather, Richard Ridgley, an immigrant to Ill. and gave each of his 12 children a 200 acre farm. Mary was called to her sisters, Sarah Ann, side because of illness. She was taken to the train in a buggy by a neighbor. She returned in a few days, her sister having died and had been buried. She was driven home in a cold rain in an open buggy from the train. She became very ill and within 2 weeks had died of pneumonia and typhoid, which was learned was the same complications that her sister had died of. A maiden lady and fried of Alfred's generation, Amelia Fite, cared for George and the children. She had come to live with her brother, Henry, who was also a good friend of Georges. Three months later, on his death bed, Amelia promised to raise and care for his children and they were quietly married. Amelia was so scotch with the children's money. She lent them money, but made them go to the bank and make out legal bank loans and demanded and received payment. If not made on time, she charged interest to them and wouldn't lend them help again.
