John Handley - 1746 - Jan 18, 1811 m. 1768
Mary Harrison - 1745 - Dec 04, 1829 12c.
John was born in Augusta Co., Va. He became a prominent citizen of Monroe Co., where his name appears on record books associated with his brothers Archibald, James and Alexander. Surveys of Botecourt show he purchased land on Indian Creek, now Monroe Co., with his brother Archibald in 1774. He also owned land in Jefferson Co.
His home in Monroe was called Handley's Fort. This was not a government fort, but a fortified house, where his family lived and neighbors gathered for a place of safety during Indian raids. It is not known exactly when the fort was built, but the date was prior to 1779, for records show that the Pauley family set out on their ill-fated trip to Kentucky from this for in the fall of 1779. The fort stood less than a hundred yards from where the County Infirmary of Monroe is now. In 1939 some of the old logs were still there and a great clump of rose bushes run to the wild.
John fought in Captain John Lewis's Company in the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. He also was a Lieutenant under General George Rogers Clark in 1782-1783. He died in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery at Union, Monroe Co., W. Va.
According to family data she was a relative or President William Henry Harrison and of Benjamin Harrison, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was killed by a team of runaway oxen which she tried to stop and drive into the barnyard gate. She is buried in the Guyandotte Cemetery near Huntington where she had gone to make her home with her son, Isaac, after her husband's death.

He operated an Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Gallipolis, Ohio. For over 50 years, he spent doing research on family ancestry. His passion for genealogy lead him all over the country, into lost and unknown graveyards, old churches, and court houses. Every holiday would be spent digging and investigating. His evenings were spent in his den recording and preserving. At the time of his death, he had completed 52 volumes of material that filled his library.

Lucinda helped raise these 3 children beside her own eight. William and Lucinda were devout Methodists and as long as they were able, they would walk long distances to attend religious meetings. Because she raised her three step-children as if they were her own, they will be listed below.

Mary E. Hanley - -
Jesse built with very limited resources the first stone building at Salt Sulpher Springs. In 1834, he went to Gasgow, Mo., and established himself in the stage business, which he pursued with great success, carrying the mails over a wide area. In 1848, he moved to St. Louis and for nearly 50 years conducted the livery business on a large scale in that city. His name is connected with many of the enterprises which are associated with the growth of St. Louis, yet he never purched himself to the front except in his private business. He was a Freemason and Odd Fellow, a member of the Merchants Exchange and a lifelong Methodist. He was very charitable, especially toward orphans and the aged and friendless. It was through his exertions that the Methodist Orphan's Home of St. Louis was established in 1883, and he was a heavey subscriber to the fund for its maintenance. He was conferred the honor of burying President Lincoln at Springfield, Ill.
