A young man once started his career by herding cattle on the rolling hills and valley of Western Missouri in Bates and Vernon Counties. His horse was his only companion; and if by chance he was near a farm house he might knock on the door and be invited to warm by the fireplace and enjoy a short visit. He and his sister, Josephine, spent several years farming for themselves near Metz, Mo. Strod did the farming and Josie, the household duties. One morning they awakened with a vision to "go West." So they loaded camp gear and supplies into the Model-T Ford and said, "California, here we come!" This was in 1922. They settled near Whittier, Ca., and later moved to Azusa, CA. The store and the carpentry work were not Strod's chosen work, and he yearned for some Missouri Mules and a piece of ground. They bought an acreage of orange trees and started grove work. This he kept up until retirement when they moved to Riverside. He is buried in Olivewood Cemetery in Riverside.

Josephine "Josie" was only two weeks old at her mother's death, and was taken into the home of her Aunt Anna Lightner, where she lived until she was 10 years old. She lived with her brother "Strod" and maintained orange and walnut groves. In their spare time, they could always be found trying to bring home some fish. After their retirement, she became very active and became a Red Cross Leader. She is now living at the Alta Vista Health Care Center, 9020 Garfield, Riverside, CA. 92503.

He was a farmer and rancher and at one time owned 3-1/2 sections (2240 acres) along Wolf Creek. He was also a County Commissioner at one time.

He was born on the homeplace near Metz, Mo. He attended business school in Springfield, Mo. This is where he met and married Gladess. She was born near Golden City, Mo., the daughter of James Marion Killion and Ida Bell Mustain. After their marriage, they established their homeplace a quarter of a mile from his parents' home. Tom followed in his father's footsteps in farming and raising livestock. Often the livestock numbered in the hundreds as did the acreage that he farmed. In 1950, he bought a feed store in Metz, Mo., and operated this business until 1952, when he sold it and returned to farming. He became very active in community affairs. He joined the Richards Masonic Lodge in 1955. He was on the school board at Metz for 23 years, and was County Court Judge of the Northern District of Vernon County for 14 years.Gladess was active in many organizations, some of which were the Metz Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, V. F. W. Auxiliary and Rebekahs. She also served as a correspondent for the Nevada Daily Mail, Metz Times, and Rich Hill Mining Review newspapers for many years. She died in Kansas City, Mo., and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, outside Rich Hill, Mo.
Veda was the daughter of Lewis Herman Jacobe and Rosa Alma Jewell Klineback and widow of Byrl Tyler. They continued to carry on with the duties of the farm until retirement in 1975, when the moved to Rich Hill, where they currently reside at 101 E. Walnut.
Tom is a man his family is proud of. He is a man that has kept his children close; no one is ever forgotten, from his children to his great-grandchildren. Every Christmas, a family gathering is held and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all attend. Words just cannot describe the type of man, and the knowledge he has given to his family and community.

He was born in his parents' home near Metz, Mo. After his graduation from Metz High School, he and Mary were married. She is the daughter of William George Ochs and Alice Eleanor Irwin. After their marriage, they made their home about 1-1/2 miles southeast of his parents' home, where he helped his father with his farming and also acquired his own farm land. On Thanksgiving Day of their first year of marriage, their home was totally destroyed by fire. They then located in a small 3-room house, 1/8 miles west of his parents' home. From there Jim Bob continued working with his father on the farm, and he also started a dairy herd, which grew to milking over 50 head of cows, twice a day. In June, 1961, ill fate struck the family again. Jim Bob, in his 31st year, was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage, caused from cancer of the brain tissue. He was taken to Research Hospital in Kansas City, and remained there for more than two months for treatment, his wife by his side. During this time, friends and neighbors of the community came in and harvested the crops and helped with other needs of the family. Also, area churches and families gave contributions to help cover medical expenses.After his return from the hospital, Jim Bob was considered totally disabled and the word from the doctors was that he had only two years to live. At this time, Mary started working outside the home. She first became a mail carrier, delivering the mail from Rich Hill to Metz, and vice versa. She later took employment at the Nevada State Hospital where she worked until October of 1982, when she transferred to Kansas City to work in the hospital there. After Jim Bob's illness, their farm was sold and they moved to Metz, Mo. A few years later, they bought a small farm outside Metz. This they later sold, then moved back to Metz for a short time before moving to Stockton, Mo. Because of his health, they later moved to Nevada. The last two years of his life were spent in a rest home because of the 24-hour-a-day care that he needed. He lived 18 years beyond the doctors' predictions. It is said that he made medical history by doing this. He was active in the Masons and was a Past Master of the Richards Masonic Lodge. He is buried in the GreenlawnCemetery near Rich Hill. Mary is a member of the Metz Methodist Church, and currently resides in Riverside, Mo.

He was born in Nevada, Mo. After graduation from Metz High School, which maintains many happy memories for him, he attended I.B.M. Business School, later starting employment with The Western Insurance Companies in Fort Scott, KS, as a computer programmer. Katherine was born in Fort Scott, the daughter of Bernard Charles Spencer and Mary Florence Paxton. They established their first home in Prescott, KS. In that same year, he joined the Richards Masonic Lodge. Having kept music as a personal hobby, he decided to share his enjoyment of notes and signing with others. With the help of family and friends, he gave birth to a Country-Western band by the name of "The State Line Station." The band had the great pleasure and honor to entertain at Rich Hill, MO., for the 4th of July Celebration. That same year, they furnished entertainment for the Annual McGinnis Youth Center Bar-B-Que, besides playing at many of the night spots in the area. In 1975, Randy made history in Kansas. He was elected Mayor of Prescott. At the young age of 26 years, he was one of the youngest persons ever elected to an elective position in the State of Kansas. This was truly a great learning experience, as politics have seemingly been a part of his family history. He was also nominated and selected that year as an Outstanding Young Man of the Year.Katherine is a graduate of the Prescott School System. She started employment after graduation, with The Western Insurance Companies as an I.B.M. keypunch operator. She was thus employed until 1970, when she took employment at a nursing home, first in Pleasanton and then in Prescott. She quit work when she became pregnant with their child. In 1977, they moved to Topeka, KS., where Randy took employment at Fleming Foods as a Chief Computer Programmer Analyst. They lived there until 1981, when they moved back to Fort Scott, due to his father's ill health; and because Randy and Kathy were both raised on farms, the big city was just not cut out for them. Randy regained employment with the Western and currently holds the title of Computer Programming Project Leader.
They own some small acreage outside town where they raise a few cattle and other livestock for enjoyment, rather than as a business. Randy is very involved with the research of his family genealogy. Besides having pictures and the stories that have passed down from generation to generation, he also has some of the heirlooms that were a part of those generations. He is responsible for the printing of this book.

They both moved to Vernon Co., at the same time and Joe settled a few miles east of Nevada in the Walker, Mo., area. He operated a farm in this area until his retirement. Sectional Brick Cornerstones can still be seen along Highway #54 east of Nevada, marking the boundary line of his property. Mary was born in Indiana, the daughter of H. P. Robinson and Elizabeth Rand. She died on their farm and he in Rich Hill, Mo. Both are buried in the Robinson Cemetery near Rich Hill, Mo.
