She and all her brothers and sisters were born on the 260-acre farm owned by her father at Levasy, Jackson Co., Mo. Her mother died when she was two years old, and she was raised by her sister, Sallie, until Sallie married. In 1898, after her father's death, she went to live with Sallie, at whose home, a farm north of Blue Springs, she was married. Sallie had moved to this farm in the spring of 1900, from a farm midway between Levasy and Oak Grove, Mo., where she and her husband were located when Pearl went to live with them. Two weeks before their marriage, pearl and Charlie bough a restaurant and small grocery store in Independence. Their marriage was celebrated on the coldest day, 9º below zero, of the winter. They sold the store after a few years, but soon bought another sotre and continued in the grocery business throughout the rest of their lives. After their two girls finished high school, the store was sold and the four of them spent the winter of 1921-22 vacationing in Texas and Louisiana. They returned to Independence in the spring of 1922 and bought a house and returned to operating a grocery store. This house dates back to the Civil War; and at one time, was owned by Charlie Thomas, grandfather of Charlie Tyree Ross, President Truman's secretary. Except for her brother, John, who was a merchant, all members of her family and that of her husband were farmers. His grandfather was John Rogers.
