and broom maker. He was marked blind in the 1860 census. On 8 Jan 1875 when

William Sanderson STEWART. (Laban,

on 28 Sep 1871 in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana. She was born 27
Dec 1848 in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana; she died 6 Dec 1924 in
Elm, Putnam County, Missouri. William and Leatha settled in Missouri, where he farmed. They had 8 children.
Family oral tradition from Eli F. Stewart's descendants held that William
left Indiana for Greentop, Missouri in the early 1860's and was not heard
from again. Several sources had indicated that he was paid $500 by his half
brother, Eli F. Stewart, to serve in Eli's place in the Civil War, but he
reneged and was afraid to return. Eli was not only out $500, but had to
serve in the Army, as well.
The story from Eli's family does not match that of William's family, nor does it fit with the facts. William did serve in the
Union Army, Company C, 23rd Indiana Infantry. He fought in the battle of
Shiloh, was wounded and captured at Raymond, Mississippi. According to William's
descendants, he returned home after the Civil War, where he lived for several
years before moving to Missouri. He apparently traveled to Morgan County, Indiana to marry
Leatha in 1871; they then returned to Missouri, where they raised their family.

poisoning, which she later succumbed to.

Joseph ALLEN & Betsey McCARTNEY, in Washington County, Indiana. Born on
