Willis Whitford was accused with Owen Griffin and John and Martin Whitford (sons of John Whitford) that they "Did Maliciously & Wilfully Drownd & Murder a Negro Man of [William Gaskins] property by the Name of Peter on Sunday the 8th day July at the Landing Calld John Whitfords, on Little Swift Creek contrary to the Laws & Dignity of this Country." The document names Willis as the son of Thomas. On 9 July 1792 in Craven County, North Carolina.1
He was personally appeared before John Frink Smith and Francis Lowthorp, Justices of the Peace, and "acknowledged themselves indebted to the State in the Sum of two Hundred Pounds" to appear at the New Bern District Superior Court in September 1792 to stand trial for the murder of Peter, slave of William Gaskins. On 10 July 1792 in Craven County, North Carolina.1
