Lorenza Lewis Toler

Lorenza Lewis Toler was born on 27 February 1853 in Craven County, North Carolina.¹ He was the son of James Toler Jr. and Celia Rowe. Lorenza Lewis Toler married Sarah Jane Caton on 15 May 1878 in Beaufort County, North Carolina.² Lorenza Lewis Toler died on 20 August 1935 in Craven County, North Carolina, at age 82 Heart disease and dropsy were listed as the causes of death. His obituary was reported in the Sun Journal on 23 Aug 1935 and read: "Lorenza L. Toler, a well known and highly respected resident of the Ernul section died suddenly August 20 at his home. He was 82 years of age. He was alone at dinner when members of the family heard him fall. When they reached him he was dead. Mr. Toler was a native of that section and spent his life there. He was a devout and active member of the Free Will Baptist church. He is survived by four sons: Kelly, Thomas, James, Seth, and one daughter, Sarah."^1,3 He was buried in Pine Tree Cemetery, Caton, Craven County, North Carolina.

Harvey H. Toler was born on 3 November 1838. He was the son of Charles Toler and Caroline Tunstall. Harvey H. Toler died on 7 August 1861 in Craven County, North Carolina, at age 22.¹ On 9 September 1861, Philip Pipkin was appointed administrator of the estate of Harvey H. Toler . Notices to the debtors and creditors were posted at the Courthouse, at the barn of Stephen G. Barrington.² On 5 October 1861, the sale of the personal property of Harvey was conducted by Philip Pipkin. Purchasers at the sale included Daniel Toler, Willis Rawles, Fredk. Jewell, Lewis Rowe, Enoch Fulshire, James H. Mulligan, Joseph Edwards, William Stilley, Thomas H. Gaskins, Vine A. Thomas, Henry Anderson, William C. Whitford, and Bryan Gaskins. The sale brought in $448.85 and included mostly farm animals, a few tools, a sulkey, a trunk and valise, and a watch.² He (an unknown value).

William Daniel Toler was born on 10 April 1840. He was the son of Charles Toler and Caroline Tunstall. William Daniel Toler married Amanda Orrell, daughter of John Orrell and Margaret McIntyre White, on 5 October 1871 in Mobile County, Alabama. 4 September 1884, the New Bern Weekly Journal reported "We frequently hear of young men who have left North Carolina being honored by the communities in which they live, and now we hear that a son of Mr. Charles Toler, of this county, W.D. Toler, who emigrated to St. Elmo, Mobile County, Alabama, in 1868, has been elected a member of the Legislature of that State by a large majority. We do not mention this, however, as an inducement for our young men to leave the state in order to reap political honors. These often fall upon a man when he least expects them."¹ William Daniel Toler died on 25 August 1885 in St. Elmo, Mobile County, Alabama, at age 45.

Elizabeth Lewis was born in April 1826 in Beaufort County, North Carolina.¹ She married Amariah Toler, son of James Toler and Rebecca Springle, circa 1852.¹ Elizabeth Lewis died on 9 January 1902 in Zorah, Craven County, North Carolina, at age 75 "Our community has been saddened by the death of Mrs. Betsey Toler...She was taken ill on Christmas Eve and continued to grow worse until the 9th inst., when she was relieved of her sufferings here below by the summons from on high. She was 76 years of age and had been a consistent member of the Baptist church during most of her life. Two sons and three daughters are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother."¹

He never married.

Annis S. Toler was born on 8 June 1859. She was the daughter of Amariah Toler and Elizabeth Lewis. Annis S. Toler married John Bunion Harrington, son of James Harrington and Eliza Gardner Stilley, on 1 April 1880 in Craven County, North Carolina.¹ Annis S. Toler died on 30 March 1940 at age 80.
Her obituary appeared in the New Bern Tribune on 31 March 1940 and read: "Funeral For Mrs. Harrington This Afternoon. Funeral services for Mrs. Annis Harrington of near Askins, mother of James A. Harrington of Bridgeton, will be held this afternoon on Route 1 and burial will be in the family cemetery near Askins. Mrs. Harrington, who suffered a heart attack yesterday, would have been 81 years old in June. She was the widow of John B. Harrington, prominent farmer of the Askins community. She is survived by two sons J.A. Harrington of Bridgeton and J.B. [sic] Harrington of Route 1; two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Whitford and Mrs. Verdie B. Whitford of Route 1; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.²
