James "was also the instrument in the hand of the Lord to assist in constituting of the church" in Milton, Craven County, North Carolina, on 18 January 1851.¹ In January 1852, James "purchased a tract of swamp land" on Bay River, Craven County, North Carolina and moved there with his family in April 1852.¹ He left a will on 11 October 1854 in Craven County, North Carolina.² He helped to constitute the church in South Creek, Beaufort County, North Carolina, in March 1855.¹ He died on 18 September 1856 in Bay River, Craven County, North Carolina, at age 52.¹ His estate was probated in March 1859 in Craven County, North Carolina.²
