WORLD WIDE W*GG*

WELCOME TO THE THIRD EDITION OF THE “WORLD WIDE W*GG*”

Editor - Vivian Egan

Well this is a bit later getting out than I had hoped, but better late than never !!!

First of all I have a NEW e-mail address: ego@a1.com.au

FINALLY, I have completed inputting the WIGG General Register Office Extracts for England & Wales - Births 1837 - 1994 ; Marriages 1837 - 1995 ; Deaths 1837 - 1992. Without the hard work and generosity of Len Wigg and Rosemary Wigg this would not have been possible. Once again many thanks !

To save on overseas postage costs, would someone from each country be willing to volunteer to distribute copies of these files on floppy disk to interested researchers ?

I cannot guarantee 100 % accuracy but it’s as good as we can get. If there are any errors PLEASE let me know so I can correct the information.

CERTIFICATE REGISTER

I am now proposing to commence a “Certificate Register” of any W*GG* birth, marriage and death certificates which anyone holds, and would be willing to share/copy details with others to augment their records [and of course save on costs - any reimbursements to be negotiated between interested parties]

Would anyone in the UK & North America like to volunteer to be the “clearing house” for their respective countries and also send on copies to me say every 6 months or so ?

BOOKS

I have been made aware of a couple of books which relate to W*GG* families. I am not sure if they are available outside the UK.

“The Wigg Family” Edited by James Lewis Kirby Jr.
Published by Phillimore ISBN 0 85033 632 5 [deals with Buckinghamshire and later to USA]

“The Wiggs of Mentmore” by [I believe] Gerald & Elizabeth Elvey.
Published by Barracuda Books ISBN 0 86023 178 X

WIGGS FORUM

Fraser Lindsay has started the ball rolling for a Wiggs discussion forum on the Internet at www.genforum.com/wiggs
Any comments on whether we should also start one for WAGG/WEGG & WIGG ???

RESEARCHERS

The number of W*GG* researchers is steadily increasing, and several have been able to link up. Consequently the list of researchers attached to the previous newsletter is now out-of-date. So to start the new year off, an updated list is attached.

Please note there have also been some changes to the distributors list as well. ** indicates a NEW researcher since the previous list was issued.

DATABASE ADDITIONS

New information is coming in at a great rate. I was lucky enough to con my husband into buying the newly released UK Vital Records Index on CD-Rom as a birthday present, and a distant cousin has been extremely kind enough to send the W*GG* extracts from the North American Vital Records Index CD-Rom. I am also hoping to have the 1881 Census Index CD Set when it is released shortly.

I have also downloaded all the W*GG* entries from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website
[URL - yard.ccta.gov.uk/cwgc/search.html]

Rosemary Wigg has sent me copies of her significant WIGG collection and I am steadily making my way through it all. Now if only I had unlimited time to enter all the details OR even better - a secretary to do it all for me !!!

FEATURE FAMILY - Abraham WIGG of Kent

Abraham WIGG was born circa 1781. On 18 Jan 1808 he married Elizabeth HASPINALL at Gillingham, Kent. They were the parents of 4 children: Abraham b.1809, William James b.1811, Jane Elizabeth b.1814 and Reuben d.1816. Abraham was buried at St Mary Northgate, Canterbury, Kent on 3 Nov 1816 aged 35.

Where were his origins ? He IS NOT the Abraham Wigg bp 23 Apr 1777 at Stockbridge, Hampshire, [son of William Wigg & Mary Smith] who married Hester Gandy.

Researching Abraham’s family are Rosemary WIGG, June HAYES, Carol AVERY, Marion SMITH and Steve KISKO. Rosemary says there is no trace of his birth/baptism in Kent under “WIGG”.................................Can anyone help ???

PROFILE SPOTLIGHT - Miss Hazel WILSON

“Born 7.2.1918 Ilford, Essex, youngest child of Thomas William WILSON, Fellow of British Optical Association, whose optician’s practice was in Ilford High Rd., and Dora Kate WIGG of Sussex. If YOU would like to have YOUR FAMILY featured or add your PROFILE please send particulars for the next issue. Due to the number of researchers we have, it will be on a FIRST COME - FIRST SERVED basis.

Please send in your ideas and don’t forget to KEEP SENDING IN your W*gg* research findings !!!

And once again a BIG THANK YOU to the volunteer newsletter distributors [and don’t forget to reimburse them for their trouble !!! ]

Until next time, best wishes & HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.................................................
