The Coleman and Jayne families were two of the earliest families who were not Dutch to settle on Long Island. Both families primarily settled in Orange and Ulster Counties in New York.  William Coleman, the immigrant ancestor, appeared to have had several wives with offspring from each of them.  Although undocumented, it is conceivable that Peter and Youngs Coleman were the sons of his third wife, Rachel Youngs.  Peter assumed the guardianship of Youngs Coleman in 1756.  It was not until 1781 that the two are picked up again in North Carolina.  Documentation from 1756-1781 is needed.

Peter Coleman Sr. was born about 1740 in Orange Co., New York.  He married Abigail Jayne, daughter of Isaac Jayne probably in Virginia.  Both families were from Orange Co., New York and appear to have traveled together.  Children of Peter and Abigail were:

• Mary born abt 1764 possibly in Grayson Co., Va.  Mary married William Davis.
  
• Rachel born 28 Mar 1767 possibly in Grayson Co., Va. She married John Burcham Jr. abt 1785 in Surry Co., North Carolina.  Rachel died 28 July 1826 in Greene Co., IN.
  
• William born 1768 in Grayson Co., Va.
  
• Abraham born 19 Jan 1770 in Va or NC.  He married Elizabeth Parker.  Abraham died about 1840 in Parke Co., IN.
  
• Peter Coleman Jr. born 1774 in Surry Co., NC.  He married 1796 in Grayson Co., Va to Charlotta Thompson.  Peter lived concurrently with Elizabeth Bentley by whom he had children in Wythe Co., Va while Charlotta was in Pike Co., KE. Peter later married 3)Sarah Dale 6 Aug 1836 in Pike Co., KE.
  
• Charity born 1775 prob in Surry Co., NC and living in Marrowbone, Pike,  KE
  
• Jerusha born 1776 prob in Surry Co., NC and living in Marrowbone, Pike, KE
  
• Stephen H. born 1781 in Surry Co., NC. He married 1)Sarah Rankin abt 1803; 2) Lucy Adkins 30 Mar 1833 in Pike Co., KE and 3)Christiana White abt 1859. Stephen died 18 April 1867 in Buchanan Co., VA.
  
• Richard born about 1785 in Surry Co., NC.  He married Abigail Jayne about 1800.  Richard died after 1860 in Pike Co., KE.
  
• Daniel born Mar 1787 in Surry Co., NC.  He married Sarah Kinder.  Daniel died 1870

Peter Coleman born 1774 in Surry Co., NC married Charlotta Thompson.  Charlotta died after 1823 in Indiana.  Their children were:

• Alexander born 1797 in Grayson Co., VA.  He married Nancy Wooten 2 Jan 1818 in Floyd Co., KE.  Alexander died 1872 or 1873 in Lawrence Co., IN.
  
• Mary born 1798 in Grayson Co., VA. Mary married Milton Howard Adkins 19 July 1818 in Floyd Co., KE. 
  
• James born 1800 in Grayson Co., Va.  James married Elizabeth Williamson, daughter of Hammond Williamson, 28 Dec 1820 in Floyd Co., KE.  James died 1838 to 1840 in Lawrence Co., IN.
  
• Esther born 1806 in Grayson Co., VA.  Esther married Daniel Hensley 17 July 1824 in Pike Co., KE.
  
• Andrew J. born 1809 in Grayson Co., VA.  Andrew married Nancy Connelly  31 Oct 1832 in Lawrence Co., IN.  Andrew died August 1853 in Lawrence Co., IN.
  
• Nancy born 1812 in Grayson Co., Va. Nothing more known.
  
• John H. born 1815 in Grayson Co., Va.  John married Elizabeth Thornsbury 26 Jan 1847 in Pike Co., KE.
  
• Mahala born 1816 in Floyd Co., KE.  Mahala married John Garrison 2 Oct 1836 in Lawrence Co., IN.  Mahala died before March 1851 probably in Lawrence Co., IN.
  

James Coleman born 1800, son of Peter Coleman and Charlotta Thompson, married Elizabeth Williamson born 1806 in Floyd Co., KE, daughter of Hammon and Ruth Ford Williamson.  Their children were:

• Harmon or Hammond Sr. born 1821 in Pike Co., KE.  He married Lucinda Ray 17 Sep 1840 in Lawrence Co., IN.  Harmon died about 1858.
  
• Alexander born 25 Jul 1824 in Pike Co., KE.  He married Merinday Jones 2 Jul 1843 in Lawrence Co., IN.  He died 15 Dec 1907 in Hazel, OK.
  
• Rutha born 1826 in Pike Co., KE.  Rutha married Enoch Burton.
  
• Charlotta born 13 Oct 1828 in Pike Co., KE.  Charlotta married John M. Hamersley 13 Feb 1845 in Lawrence Co., IN.  Charlotta died 19 Nov 1921 in NE.
  
• James W. born 1830 in Pike Co., KE. He married Catherine Beasley 1 Feb 1852 in Lawrence Co., IN.
  
• Emaria born 10 Mar 1832 in Pike Co., KE.  She married James Roberts 3 Mar 1854 Lawrence Co., IN.  She died 4 May 1903 in Lawrence Co., IN.
  
• Andrew Jackson born 1834 in Lawrence Co., IN; married there in 6 Mar 1861 to Manerva Hildebrand and he died in Lawrence Co., IN 23 Feb 1864.
  
• Elizabeth A. born 1837 in Lawrence Co., IN; married James Meyers about 1855.
