Peter Miller who became the first Butte County, Superintendent of Schools, was a native of Morgan Co., Ohio born there October 11, 1843.  He was a veteran of the Civil War serving with Company G, 92nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He married Sarah Margaret Foraker at Stockton, Cedar County, Missouri on September 12, 1871.

The couple migrated westward; and in Nebraska their first child, Mary Etta was born November 23, 1874.  They remained in Nebraska only a short time, then travelling in a covered wagon, reached the Black Hills area of Dakota Territory in 1876 or 1877.

Mr. Miller chose a location on Sour Dough Flat in western Butte County for a place to establish a home for himself and family.  Early settlers were interested in educational advantages for their children and short terms of school were held in any available shack.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Miller were teachers and taught some of these terms.

Later, Mr. Miller filed on a claim about a mile north of the present site of Nisland and taught one term of school in his claim shack at the foot of a butte which still bears his name.

The town of Minnesela was founded in 1882.  Governor N. Ordway of Dakota Territory designated the new town as the county seat of Butte County and appointed county officers.  Among them was Peter Miller who became county superintendent of schools.  He held this office one term with a salary of $50 annually.  At the next election, he was elected Register of deeds and later filled the office of county treasurer.

Six more children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Miller, namely: Charles William, April 19,1876; Samuel Oliver, June 3, 1878; Nettie Irene Dec 1, 1881; Crissie Ann, June 3, 1886; Lloyd Noble, July 16, 1888; and Inez Pearl December 4, 1890.

The Miller family remained here until 1912, about thirty-four years, then sold their property and moved to Vancouver, Washington, where Mr. Miller died January 2, 1916.  Mrs. Miller died in Portland, Oregon in 1930.

A granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Mike Sankovich of Poulsbo, Washington furnished us with much of the above data.  Mrs. Sankovich is a daughter of Mary Etta Miller, who married William R. Chadbourne in Belle Fourche June 7, 1897.
