There are several stories about Thomas and his father. One is
that Thomas' father was hung on the courthouse square  by the
Tories for being loyal to the Colonists and allowing them to meet
in his home.

Another story is that Thomas last name was Lips but took on the
Vines name when his mother married a man named Vines. Another
story that might tie into this last one is that Thomas and his
brother's Jewish parents died en route to America while crossing
the Atlantic Ocean and that Thomas and his brother were taken in
by a Vines family and took on the Vines name.
