The Will of Robert Vines of Great Somerford 1751

In the Name of Almighty God. I Robt. Vines of the Parish of Great Somerford in the County of Wilts, being of perfect and sound memory and understanding do make my last will and testament as follows:

I most humbly pray God to receive my soul for the sake of Jesus Christ and I desire that my body may be decently buryed at ye direction of my executor in trust hereafter named.

I give to my grandson Charles Hartford of Dauntsey in the said county my silver sugar dish, my two large silver spoons and twenty five pounds of good and lawful money of Great Brittain, to be paid when he comes to the age of one and twenty years and in case the said Charles Hartford dies before he comes to that age I then give the said five and twenty pounds to my grand daughter Mary Hartford as an addition to some other gifts hereafter mentioned.

I give to my grand daughter Mary Hartford of Dauntsey aforesaid my silver tumbler, my silver dram dish and forty pounds of good and lawful money of Great Brittain, the same to be paid when she attains the age of one and twenty years and in case she dies before that age it is my will then that the said forty pounds be paid to her brother ye said Charles Hartford as an addition to the abovementioned legacy.

I give to my daughter in law Eliz'th Vines five shillings.

The rest and residue of my goods and chattels after the payment of my debts legacies and funeral charges I give and bequeath to my grandson Tho's Vines of Great Somerford aforesaid whom I make sole executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills and testaments by me any time heretofore made.

And forasmuch as the said Tho's Vines my executor is under age I do hereby nominate and appoint my worthy friends Mr Rob't Dyer of Calne in the county of Wilts, afores. gent, and my daughter in law his mother to be trustees for him my said executor during his minority.

I do beseech my said worthy friends to act in this trust relying upon their goodnese wisdom and prudent management. But if Tho's Vines my grandson should die before one and twenty years I will that what I have given him be divided between my other grand children, Charles and Mary Hartford by equal portions, if they survive him, or all to one of them if one only survives his coming to the age of one and twenty.

And farther by way of acknowledgment that what I have above given and bequeathd was bestowed upon me by the goodness of God I do therefore give twenty shillings of lawful money to such of the poor of Somerford aforesaid as duely attend upon Divine Service and are most remarkable for their frequenting of the Lords Supper. As the minister of the said parish knows best who they are my will is that the sum aforesaid be either lodg'd into his hands or otherwise given by his directions as soon as possible after my decease.
