Elizabeth Holliday, Mrs
Benjamin Vines of Grittenham
1693-1767
Elizabeth was the youngest
daughter of John Holliday, yeoman, of Hazill Hill, Lydiard Tregoze, Wilts.
She was baptised 22nd June 1693 and married Benjamin Vines (1689-1763)
at Lydiard Tregoze in 1717. Her death occurred 4 years after that of Benjamin,
in 1767 (her will was signed and dated 20th December 1767).
John Holliday was apparently
born in 1647 and from his will made 18 Jan. 1727/8, & proved in the
Archdeaconry Court of Wilts., 5 Nov. 1730, apparently lived to 1730. His
wife Margaret, mother of Elizabeth, was buried 15 Sept. 1727.
The will of John Holliday
includes the following extract (Courtesy of Richard Carruthers):
*="Item, I give and bequeath
unto my Son: In: Law Benjamin Vines, the
principal Sum of Ninety
Pounds, & the Interest thereof, due to me on a
Mortgage of a newly erected
Messuage or Tenement, & Lands in Brinkworth in

Also from Richard Carruthers:
"The Diocese of Sarum
[Salisbury] marriage licence bonds and allegations CD put out by the Wiltshire
Family History Society shows ..... an Elizabeth Holliday aged 22 , of Lydiard
Tregoze, to marry by licence one John Seymour, brushmaker of St James's
Westminster, Middlesex aged 21, in which the bondsman for the licence is
none other than Benjamin
Vines, yeoman, of Grittenham, Brinkworth. The marriage apparently
took place at Sherston Magna on 20 April 1730." (ie when Benjamin had already
been married 13 years so this was probably the niece of his wife).
From the will of Benjamin
in 1763 comes the following extract relevant to the mention in his father-in-law's
will of the property
at Hook:
"First I give Devise and
Bequeath unto my loving Wife Elizabeth Vines my Leasehold Estate at Hook
in the parish of Liddyard Treygooze in the said County of Wilts Containing
One Messuage or Tenement and three Closes of Meadow or Pasture Grounds
To hold the same Messuage or Tenement Closes of Meadow or Pasture Ground
and premises with the Appurtenances unto my said wife Elizabeth Vines and
her Assigns for and during the Term of her natural life
And from and immediately
after her decease I give devise and bequeath the same and every part thereof
unto my Two Sons William Vines and Edward Vines and to their Executors
and Administrators share and share alike for and during all the Term Interest
and Estate I have therein "
