Born at Reading Berks, married Hannah Cook 1822 London. Worked variously as a developer, architect and investor in London.
Daughters were educated 2x2 in Switzerland and France, (From letters.Original in State Library of Victoria Manuscripts Collection, MSB 76, MS 9684).
Migrated to Ohio to join sister Ann Ward but returned to UK.
Hannah and most of the children, without Joshua, crossed to Philadelphia in 1848 in "Sir Robert Peel" to visit Mrs Hudson Ward.
Left England 1854 on "Donald McKay" for Melbourne with wife Hannah, son Caleb (it is thought Joshua jun came out earlier) (sister Hannah had married in Philadelphia) Maria, Louisa, Jane, Mary Ann, Ellen.

Hannah married in Philadelphia 1848.
Ship "Sir Robert Peel" 1848 when "Mamma" took the whole family to Philadelphia to visit Mamma's sister Mrs Hudson Ward. ??? Mr Vines stayed in England. Hannah married a Philadelphian. Jane married Ebenezer Davies of Geelong."

Jane married Ebenezer Davies at Geelong.
"The daughters had been sent two by two to be educated in Switzerland and France. Jane, who became Mrs Duff's grandmother had been, during periods back in England from school, at a "a Dame's school"."

Joshua 1834-1906, Joshua came to Victoria before the rest of family (?) He married Mary Martha Nicholls 1863. He worked at several different ventures including a stage coach business to central and western Vic, gold mining and hotels.

Married John Tayshill Dowling 1861. Died 1901.

Ellen married Benjamin Dowling in 1867.

Came with family to Vic in 1855. Worked in banks, as a gold buyer and as a stock and station agent at Echuca on the Murray River border where he became mayor in 1913. Married Mary Jane Landells 1866, Jessie Annie Warner 1908, 1 son.
