Richard & Catherine on 1860 Allegany County (Shade Mills/ Dist. 3), Maryland census

During the Civil War, served as a farrier in Company H, First Regiment of the Maryland Potomic Home Brigade. He enlisted at Cumberland, Maryland, on February 13, 1864, while a resident of Shade Mills, Allegany Co. (now Garrett Co.), Maryland. His physical description was: grey eyes, dark hair, 5' 2 1/2" tall, weight 130 pounds, florid complexion.

Richard, a widower, is listed on the 1900 Somerset County (Elk Lick Twp.), Pennsylvania, census with his daughter and family. He was still residing in Elk Lick Township in November, 1903 and March, 1904 and Aug. 1906
