Descendants of John Viands

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 VIANDS was born Bet. 1755 - 1765 in Augusta Co., VA ?, and died Bef. 1880 in Virginia ?.

Notes for JOHN VIANDS:

According to his death certificate, Thomas Viands's was born to John Viands in Augusta Co., VA abt. 1785 (although some census records show his birth date as early as 1776). The "Viands" name is first used by Thomas and his children in Page Co., VA, however, there were many "Vines" in the Augusta Co. area that are most likely relatives of Thomas Viands. The census records show the following members of the early Vines family in Augusta Co., VA and surrounding areas:

Census 1810 Augusta Co., VA

John Vines - 1 male 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 16-26

Anne Vines - 2 males 0-10, 1 male 45+, 2 females 0-10, 1 female 26-45

Thomas Vines - 2 males 16-26, 1 female 10-16

Census 1820 Augusta Co., VA

John Vines - 2 males 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-16, 1 female 26-45

Aense Vines - 1 males 0-10, l males 10-16, 1 female 0-16, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45

Thomas Vines - 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+

Census 1830 Rockbridge Co., VA

John Vines - Males: 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 30-40; Females: 1 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 30-40

Thomas Vines - Males: 1 15-20, 1 70-80; Females: 1 50-60

The Thomas Vines listed in these census records is most likely Thomas Vines IV from Amherst County, Virginia (b. 1756 as the son of Thomas Vines III), who married (1) Anna Smith abt. 1779, and (2) Mary Hill, and died in Rockbridge, Augusta Co. in 1837. There is much documentation on this family's descendants, and they can trace their ancestry to the early English settlers of eastern Virginia. However, not much is known yet on the descendants of the "John" and "Anne" listed in these census records. It is likely that they are related to Thomas Vines IV in some way. And, we do know that Thomas IV had a brother named John (b. April 19, 1768) who married Lydia Wanless in Bath Co., VA in 1810. Thomas Vines IV also had a son names John Silas Vines (b. 1784 in VA) who married (1) Polly Hodge on Sept. 21, 1801 in Albemarle County, VA; (2) Jane Brown on Mar. 1, 1810 in Augusta County, VA; and Mary B. Gregory on Dec. 7, 1829 in Virginia. John Silas Vines is to young to be a candidate for Thomas Viands father.

Other John Vines that appear in marriage records in counties near Augusta Co., VA are as follows:

Shendanoah County Marriage Book

John Vine married Elizabeth Bowers on 8/2/1808. John's father is listed as Adam Vine. Adam is most likely another son of Thomas Vines IV.

Greensville County, VA

John Vines married Lurena Wrenn on 20 Sep 1790.

All of these marriages listed would have occurred after Thomas Viands was born. Most likely, if one of them does refer to his father, John, they are a record of a second marriage.

More About JOHN VIANDS:

Census: 1810, Augusta Co., VA - May be him

Note: The most probable match for this John Viands is John Vines (b.1768 ) married to Lydia Wanless. They were married in Bath County, VA in 1810. If this is the case, then these Vines descend back to the early JamesTown, VA settlers, who came from England.

Child of JOHN VIANDS is:

2. i. THOMAS2 VIANDS, b. Abt. 1785, Augusta Co., VA; d. May 13, 1853, Hawksbill, VA.

Generation No. 2

I am doing background history on several family groups at the furnaces and forges in Shenandoah County. At Speedwell Forge in what is now Page County I have found at least three families with ties to Augusta County - Joseph Harberger, William Dalton, and Thomas Viands - based on Chalkey's Chronicles and marriage bonds. If anyone is researching these families, and is trying to find where they went about 1800-1810, you can find them on p. 159 of the 1820 Shenandoah County census, although William Dalton is dead by then so you need to look at 1810 or in the personal property tax lists, 1810-1814, for him.

More About THOMAS VIANDS:

Burial: Private

Cause of Death: typhiod fever

Census 1: 1820, Speedwell Forge, Shenandoah County, VA p. 159 - neighbor is John Day

Census 2: 1840, Page Co, VA - p.165

Census 3: 1850, Page County, VA

Note 1: All "Viands" in the U.S. seem to descend from Thomas and Nancy Day Viands.

Note 2: One exception is the Viands from York Co., PA. Angeline Vines and family migrated from Rockingham Co., VA after the death of her husband William J. Vines around 1900. Their name changed to Viands. There is no known relationship with Thomas and Nancy.

Occupation 1: 1820, Manufacturing

Occupation 2: 1850, Forgeman

Notes for EDITH:

Thomas never appears on the record as married to an Edith. Her name comes from the Death Record of John A. Viands (1818-1901) in Jefferson Co., WV. The name of his mother is somewhat illegible, but appears to be "Edith."

More About EDITH:

Note: Some researchers claim that Thomas's wife's name is Edith. This comes from John A. Viands death certificate in Jefferson Co., WV - which is partly unreadable.

Notes for NANCY DAY:

Page News Courier, 1880

VIANDS, MRS. died 03 May 1880 at Page Co., Va. Son-William Viands.
