Migration Path of Hillyard Hicks:
The following is my update for Hillyard Hicks of his Migration timeline. A couple months ago we were contacted by "John Shinpaugh," a Ledsinger/Letsinger researcher. I sent him all our Hillyard Hicks information. We believe that Ledsinger is the first wife of Hillyard Hicks. The wife of his first 7 of his 12 children, that we know about. I have combined my timeline and John's in the following data. If you are researching Old Hillyard Hicks, perhaps this guide of where he was at a certain time, will be a help to you. If you learn anything new on him or any of his family, we would love to know about it. Thanks-Virginia
Update Hilliard Hicks Timeline In updating the timeline, I'll concentrate only on that period of time up to Hilliard's second wife. Except for the first wife's children, subsequent events have no Led/tsinger connection that we have yet identified. In the following update, additions, changes or new entries will be preceded by a + sign. - John Shinpaugh
+1791 - Hillyard Hicks was born in Dec. in NC (Note: This is my theory - it seems to me that after Hilliard left NC he would not have kept track of changes in the line between NC and VA and whether his birthplace was in one or the other. Assuming he was old enough to remember being in NC when he went to TN the first time, then he would have claimed NC as his birthplace, if that indeed was where he was born.)
+before 1812 - He moved to East TN. (Note: Was this a family move or a move of his alone?)
+1812 - He enlisted at Maynardville, East TN on Aug 29. He was a private in the 2nd Regiment of the US Light Dragroon, in Capt. Samuel G. Hopkins company, commanded by Col. James Burns. (Note: At the time of his enlistment and until mid-1800s, Maynardville was in Cooke County; it was renamed Union County in 1846.)
+1812 - He was in Grant County, IN in Dec., where he fought in the Battle of Mississinewa.
+1814 - He was discharged at Sackets Harbor, NY Feb. 20th. (I'll cover possible NY Ledsingers in Search Results.) (Note: Sackets Harbor is in northwest NY on Lake Ontario, many miles NE of Buffalo. Traveling from Sackets Harbor, Hillyard probably went south into middle PA.)
+1815 - He married #1 unknown Ledsinger in ??
+1815 - 1818 - Hillyard Hicks' first and second daughters were born in ??
+1820 - Hillyard's son, John Wesley, was born in Feb in IL. 1820 - Hillyard Hicks was married, living in Monroe County, IL. He had one son under 10 years old and 2 daughters under 10 years.
+1821 - 1824 - Hillyard and family move from IL to TN.
+1825 - Hillyard's son, E. C. Hicks, born in Dickson, TN and his son Daniel Crawford Hicks born June 23 in Dickson, TN. (Note: He and Daniel must have been twins, don't you think?) (Note: Dickson is in Middle TN, west of Nashville and many miles west of Roane County. Where did Dickson originate as their place of birth?)
1826 - Hilliard Hicks was listed on the Tax List of Capt. Matlock Company,
Roane County, TN.
His Land is as follows:
Land was Clinch (Situation ) 59, Land -1 (White Poll)
There is also listed- Philip Ledsinger
In 1826 Tax List of Roane Co. Tenn. in Capt. Cox's Co. Tax List there is
John Letsinger Wo V.(Situation) 26 (land)
John Hix CR (Situation) 223 (Land) 1 (White Poll)
+1829 - Hillyard's daughter Cynthia A. Hicks born in IN and son Samuel Eskridge Hicks born in TN. (Obviously, IN should have been TN; probably a typo.) (Again, were these two also twins?)
+1830 - Hilliard Hicks was in Roane County, TN. At this time he had 3
sons and 2 daughters. (Note: Based on the children you identified, his total
would have been 4 sons and 3 daughters if they had all lived. Obviously,
the number of sons is in error on the census.)
Records show that in 1830 Captain Whites'Co. 1st School district, beginning
on Clinch River at Francis Erwins, down the river mouth of white oak creek
then up the Creek to the fork thence with the East fork to the County line,
thence with S'd Line to the beginning including the following: Hillard Hix,
Phillip Lettsinger, John Hix.
+1831- Hillyard Hicks and family moved from TN to IN. +1832 - Hillyard's son Hilliard Stephen Hicks born in IN.
+1835 - Unknown Ledsinger Hicks died in Greene County, IN. (Note: First wife died sometime after birth of Hilliard Stephen Hicks)
1835 - Hillyard Hicks married #2 Marissa Osbone on 26 Dec in Greene County, IN.
1838 Hilyard moved from Indiana to Missouri (ref: biographical sketch of E.C. Hicks History of Northern Ca.)
