The Province of Margarita was established in 1525. She is oldest
of the provinces that formed the Post of captain-general of Venezuela. In 1821
it formed part of the Department of the Orinoco. In 1863 it became a state of
the Federation. In 1864 it is declared independent and it forms the United
States of Venezuela. In 1881 Becomes part of the Guzmán Blanco state. In 1898
it is dismembered, being left the Aragua-Margarita sections turned into a single
organization. In 1899 the state of Margarita is established, which retakes the
name of Nueva Esparta in 1901. In 1909 the state Nueva Esparta is created.
Cubagua becomes part of it in 1948.
