General Information

The state Lara is located in the West of the country and limits by the North with the state Falcon, to the East with the states Yaracuy and Cojedes, to the West with the Zulia state and to the South with the states Trujillo and Portuguesa.

Initially, the territory that today we know as the state Lara was occupied by several indigenous groups, emphasizing the Caquetíos, the Jirajaras and the Gayones, seated mainly in Tocuyo, whereas the Axaguas and Achaguas were located in the present municipality of Torres. Throughout the period of the Colony and great part of the Independentista movement, the territories of Lara belonged to the province of Caracas. In 1824 the first Law of Territorial Division was dictated according to which Lara was part of the Province of Carabobo. When the Gran Colombia desintegrated, in the new Constitution of 1830, the territories of Lara continued being part of the Province of Carabobo until the 29 of March of 1832, when it was disintegrated and the Province of Barquisimeto, conformed by the corners of San Felipe, Yaritagua, Quibor, El Tocuyo, Carora  was created, with Barquisimeto as capital. The National Constitution of 1881 decided the creation the Great State of the North of the West formed by the states Barquisimeto and Yaracuy, which later became Lara, who owes its name to general Jacinto Lara, prócer of the Independence Movement in Venezuela. The Lara territory again had a modification by the Decree of the National Congress of the 22 of April of 1899, that ordered the reinstalación of the states as described in the Constitution of 1864. Finally the Constitution of the 5 of September of 1909, allows the organization of twenty federal states, the state Lara acquires definitively its autonomy and territorial integrity.

Family History Centers (See Microfilmed Records)

The Family History Centers are part of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and are available to their members to fulfill the covenant of Family Sealing.

However, they also provide an important service to the general public, allowing them access to their vast library of microfilmed civil records, ecclesiastic records, and many other documents of genealogical value without having to be a member of their church.

These centers are staffed with voluntary teams and there is no charge for the use of their facilities, except for some nominal fees for photocopies, pedigree charts, film rentals, etc.
