The city was founded on 1567 with the name of
Santiago of Leon of Caracas and it became one of the most prosperous Spanish
colonial communities of South America. The city was sacked by English privateers
under the control of Amyas Preston in 1595. Around April of 1810 Caracas became
the center of the first rebellion in the war of independence against Spain,
taking later Simón Bolivar its leadership. From 1576 it has been the capital of
the province of Venezuela, strengthening this position as of 1777 in the
Capitania General of Venezuela, although it lost this role in 1821, to recover
it definitively in 1830 . Throughout its history the city has undergone some
severe earthquakes, in 1812 10,000 people died and the city was destroyed almost
in its totality.
In the middle of a valley at 960 meters (3,150
ft) above the sea level, the settlers of Caracas enjoy an pleasant temperate
climate all year around, reason why they named it "Heaven's Branch on Earth".
In Caracas there has been born a significant
European descending population, mainly Spanish and Italian, many of which have
been dedicated to the small and medium industry. A significant population of
Colombians and Portuguese also exists. In the middle of the ' 70s, near 30% of
the population of Caracas was born in zones outside the metropolitan area. Many
of them migrated from depressed rural areas, and have established their homes in
the called "barrios", or marginal areas of low income.
Distrito Capital is
Venezuela's administrative división created in 1999 by the new Constitution of
the República Bolivariana de Venezuela in substitution of the Distrito Federal.
It is located in the central northern part of the country, limited by the north
and west by Vargas state, and by the south and east by Miranda.

Catedral of Caracas
This construction was raised between 1665 and 1713, in the
present corner of La Torre, on one of the corners of the Bolivar Plaza, shortly
after which in 1641 an earthquake destroyed the old church that was based there.
In this temple are the mortal rests of the parents and the wife of Simón
Bolivar.

Basilica of Santa Teresa
Located between the corners of Palm to Santa Teresa, in the
center of Caracas, this work made in neoclassic style, in fact is constituted by
two churches: to the west Santa Ana and the east Santa Teresa. The
basilica contains an image of Christ which it is known with the name of Nazareno
of San Pablo, that dates from almost two centuries, widely venerated mainly in
Easter to have, in agreement with the popular belief, miraculous virtues and
powers. Under the great cupola, ornamented with fresh, the altar is located,
which can be observed from any point of the temple. The Basilica of Santa
Teresa, National Monument, was built on the ruins of the old Oratorio of San
Felipe Neri which dates from 1771. The Designer of the same one was the
architect Stolen Juan Manrique and his technical director Dr Jesus Muñoz Tebar.
Church of San Francisco
It's importance as historical patrimony of the natives of
Caracas were worth for it to be declared National Monument. The construction of
this church began in 1575, although it underwent external remodeling in XVII and
XVIII centuries . The original scenery has practically stayed intact. The
historical load of this temple is powerful, for it was there where Simón
Bolivar was proclaimed the Liberator. In addition, it has an altarpiece that is
considered one of the best conserved piece of the Venezuelan colonial art.
Santa Capilla
Protects one of the most consecrated pieces of the Venezuelan
painter Arturo Michelena: multiplication of breads. This work also erected by
Guzmán Blanco in 1883, at the corner Santa Capilla of Urdaneta avenue.
