General Information

Loaded of history, this small Venezuelan state must its name to the Cojedes river, that translates "where everything occurs". Small and fertile territory, with a 14,800 surface of km2 and a population near the 250,000 inhabitants. It is located in the West-center of the Venezuelan territory. By the north it limits with the states Carabobo and Yaracuy; to the east, with the Guárico state; to the west with the states Portuguesa and Lara, and to the south, with the Barinas state.

In the territorial division of Venezuela of 1830, the present Cojedes state appears in the Province of Carabobo. Later, in 1855, the Senate and the House of Representatives decrees the division of Carabobo in two provinces. A conserve the name and calls Cojedes, with the city of San Carlos AS its capital, taking political-administrative physiognomy when the Constitution of 1857 is promulgated. Only until the 28 of March of 1864, Falcon decreed itself to its creation like state, signed by general Juan Crisóstomo.

In 1881, the Cojedes state happens to along with form the states Portuguesa and Zamora, the South state of the West, until the 1892 constitution when Great Zamora State is denominated. The political-territorial structure stays intact, except for some name changes in the constitutions of 1891 and 1893, until 1899 when Cojedes returns to its configuration of state. Nevertheless, in 1901 it loses that denomination again to integrate the Zamora state with his districts: Anzoategui, Girardot, Pao, Ricaurte, San Carlos and Tinaco, whereas the district Falcon is absorbed by the Carabobo state, until the 1909 constitution when its autonomy like federal entity recovers.
