Barinas is located in the Andean region of Venezuela and limits
with the following states: to the north with Trujillo,
Portuguesa and Cojedes,
to the south with Apure, the east with Guárico
and the west with Táchira and Mérida.
From his foundation in 1577, it belonged to the Province of the
Espiritu Santo. Soon it became the Province of Mérida of the Espiritu Santo. In
1622 it was transformed into Province of Mérida and La Grita. In 1676 Province
of Mérida of the Espiritu Santo of Maracaibo. In 1823 it was divided in two
provinces: Barinas and Apure. In 1862 it changes the name of Barinas to Zamora.
In 1881 it forms the South state of the West, denominating itself in 1891 Great
Zamora State. In 1937 it retakes the name of Barinas. It is divided in eleven
municipalities and forty parishes.
