General Information

It originated with the creation of the Río Negro district, on August 20, 1841, being to the south of the Guayana province. In 1856 it became part of the Amazonas provice, declared federal stateon March 28, 1864, made up by the departments: San Fernando de Atabapo, Maroa and San Carlos.

In 1873 it became again territory of Río Negro. After being adjusted in size, the territory beame what it is today since 1893.

In 1936 by decree in Organic Law, the limits were established and was divided in four departments which existed until it became state in 1992: Atabapo, Atures, Casiquiare y Río Negro.

The capital Puerto Ayacucho, was founded in 1924 by order of Juan Vicente Gómez. The state assigned its name in April 23, 1856, in honor to the Amazonas river, which was discovered by Francisco de Orellana in 1542, who also is quoted for the name of the river, as result of a legend about a tribe of female warriors who strongly opposed the Spanish conquistadores, which reminded him of the Greek legend of the Amazons.

The state is located south of Venezuela, limited by the north with Bolívar state; to the south with Brasil; to the east with Brasil and Bolívar state; and to the west with Colombia.

Family History Centers (Records on Microfilm)

The Family History Centers are part of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and are available to their members to fulfill the covenant of Family Sealing.

However, they also provide an important service to the general public, allowing them access to their vast library of microfilmed civil records, ecclesiastic records, and many other documents of genealogical value without having to be a member of their church.

These centers are staffed with voluntary teams and there is no charge for the use of their facilities, except for some nominal fees for photocopies, pedigree charts, film rentals, etc.
