from Hilmarton and Calne in Wiltshire

Updated Sept 2004:  Some connections I am not sure about, and these I have noted

St Lawrences,Hilmarton  (from Mel Wilkins)

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 WILKINS was born 1680 in Hilmarton. He married ANNE. A John Wilkins was buried Oct 25 1761, may have been this John or his son or someone else.

1841 census shows Jane with James, Betty and their children George and Henry. If Jane were Betty's child she would have been born when Betty was 50 which is unlikely although possible. The igi reveals just the mother of Jane: 'Elizabeth' - could have been Betty, or George's wife. So, not clear whether Jane is George's sister or daughter.

25. CHARLES COLEMAN5 WILKINS (DANIEL4, EZEKIEL3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Bet. 1805 - 1808 in Hilmarton. He married HARRIETT CHIVERS18 June 13, 1826 in Hilmarton18. She was born 1801.

'Charles was born to Mary, wife of John Coleman' according to the Parish Records - ' a soldier in HM Service and supposed to be now in Jersey' - but his father was reputed to be Daniel Wilkins. No dob given. Charles seems always to have used both surnames, with a preference for Wilkins. A few years afterwards Daniel and Mary started having 'legitimate' children. Is this the same Mary, and did she divorce her soldier husband (or perhaps he died) and marry Daniel? Assume this is so.

1841 Charles is living in Hilmarton with Harriett and their children.

1851: Charles is a gamekeeper, still in Hilmarton with Harriett and some of the children.

Notes for THOMAS WILKINS:

Thomas enlisted in the 62nd Foot on the 11th April, 1846, at Salisbury. His description at that time is as follows: Age 18 years and 9 months, height 5 ft 5 1/2 inches. Complexion fair, eyes grey, hair dark brown. Distinctive mark - a burn on the right cheek, also a burn scar on the inside of his right elbow. In return for his ‘Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity’ he was paid 2 shillings and sixpence, and a bounty of 4 pounds. He was certified medically fit for service at that time, and signed his documents with a cross. His parish is noted as Compton, near Calne, his occupation as labourer.

Just before Thomas enlisted, the 62nd Foot had been fighting the 1st Sikh War, in India. The casualties had been very high, not only because of the fighting, but also because of the cholera that raged through the part of India the regiment was in at the time. This war had, however, ended in February 1846, although the regiment stayed in India until the end of the year. I presume that Thomas was sent to India shortly after enlisting, but he would not have seen any of the fighting which was over by then. The regiment stayed at Lahore, and then decamped to Ferozepore in November 1846 prior to marching to Calcutta and embarking for England. Many soldiers in the 62nd Foot wanted, I suppose for a variety of reasons including financial ones, to stay in India and 237 of them transferred to other regiments that would be staying. Thomas was probably one of them, as he was in the 29th Foot upon discharge from the army.

Thomas was discharged from the 29th Regiment of Foot on 8th February 1849, at Chatham, aged 22 years. He was in action in India on 13th January 1849 when his left arm was shattered by grapeshot, needing amputation of his arm at its upper third. This was at the Battle of Chilliawallah, in the Punjab, during the Second Sikh War. (This link will take you to the British Forces.com site which contains a lot of very interesting detailed information about the history of these wars, and others. For another very informative site, please link to Cathy Day's pages which contain more info especially about the 62nd Foot in India). The Battle of Chilliawallah took place during the night of the 13th and British casualties were very heavy.

Thomas joined the 62nd Foot and apparently transferred to the 29th sometime between 1846 and 1849. One explanation is that he may have wanted to stay in India for financial or other reasons. If the 62nd Foot were leaving India and the 29th staying on he could have transferred. This seems the most likely explanation. Unfortunately, the eventual cost to him was high.

After his discharge from the army because of his severe injury he went to live in Calne, and was registered as an Outpensioner of Chelsea Hospital. In return for a pension he could be required to undertake some sort of military service, perhaps in the local barracks or whatever, but not active service.

He married Mary Ann, a widow, and lived at Back St, Calne (photos below). Marriage witnesses: Thomas Smart and Martha Wilkins (? daughter of Joseph and Anne aged 15).  I don't know which house they lived in, or Thomas' occupation, he is just described in the census as an army pensioner.

His son Thomas was born in Calne (which appears to be counted under Hilmarton at that time) and in 1881 he was still living in Calne and still receiving an army pension. Thomas was present at his son's marriage to Catherine in 1891. Thomas died in Church St, Calne 10th April 1900, aged 71 years, occupation Greengrocer and army pensioner, from prostatic enlargement and septic cystitis for 17 days. Thomas jnr was in attendance.

Mary Anne was a widow (Stephen Angell) with a young child at the time of her marriage

It serves the area enclosed on the North by the river Lys and a line drawn from Estaires to Fournes, and on the South by the old Southern boundary of the First Army about Grenay.  (Source: Commonwealth War Graves Commission)

v. FRED WILKINS, b. 1878, Milton, Berks.

vi. HERBERT WILKINS, b. 1880, Milton, Berks.

Charles and Annie BRIDGES lived at Fairview House, Goatacre (Annie's parent's house).  Charles was the captain of the Hilmarton Cricket Club.  When they moved to Sussex the CC wrote them a letter dated March 23 1895 wishing them well.  Signatories to the letter include W RUMMING, T RUMMING, Wm HADDRELL, R BURCHELL, James WILKINS,  Fred WILKINS, Willie WILKINS, and J WILKINS (Goatacre).

According to his diary, Charles'  mother was buried 7th July 1892.  Coffin bearers included Jim and Jasper WILKINS.

Annie HENLY wrote a poem called 'The Practice' in 1884, describing the Hilmarton choir practising for the concert to be held in April (personal communication, Frances Lewis).  Jim WILKINS is mentioned as a tenor from whom 'little is heard' but apparently he was a newcomer to the choir and Annie thought he would sing louder when he had been more often.  Tom RUMMING is also in the choir, a bass singer, not such a 'whopping great chap' as his father.

41. THOMAS7 WILKINS (THOMAS6, JOSEPH5, JAMES4, ROBERT3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born December 31, 1861 in Back St, Calne, Wiltshire, (see photos - I don't know which house) and died Aft. 1930. He married CATHERINE ANDERSON October 26, 1891 in St Augustine Church, Haggerston, London. She died January 03, 1930 in Old Mill House, Fobbing, Essex.

Notes for THOMAS WILKINS:

1881 census - lodging at 5 London Row, Chadwell St Mary and working as a railway engine cleaner. Born in Calne. The only problem with this is he is listed as 10 years old - but if this were a misprint (as seems likely) and he was 20 this would fit in very well; his occupation and residence are consistent with his future life.

Bud remembers her grandfather taking her to the railway station at Low St, W Tilbury. He was a portly gentleman, deafened by years of being a railway fireman - the engines were open to the air then and it had ruined his hearing. He was immaculate, often wearing his Sunday suit, with watch chain gleaming across his front. Bud remembers her grandmother, Kate, more as a presence than anything else, she died when Bud was young. But there are Scottish connections there, Henry even used to speak with a Scottish accent on (rare) occasions.

Other family names connected with Thomas Wilkins are his friends from Calne, Haddrell (a 'taxi driver' of gypsy origins who was illiterate but knew every road in the South of England including London), Burt, and .... Knee! The Knees had a removals business around the Trowbridge area.
