The Pascoe family

The Pascoes originated in Gwennap, Cornwall, in the heart of the tin mining area of Cornwall

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 PASCOE was born 1785 death cert or in 1791  1841 census, in Cornwall. His parents were James PASCOE born about 1755, and Temperance ODGERS.  He married MARY ANNE FRANCIS September 18, 1817 in Gwennap, Cornwall marriage cert. She was born Abt. 1796 in Cornwall death cert. and died 1st April, 1873 in St Day, Gwennap.

In 1841 James, an Ag Lab is living with his wife, Mary Anne and 9 children in Market St, St Day, Gwennap 1841 census. At that time, two children, Temperance and Matthew, are not present - they may have died.

James was a blacksmith in the 1820s and lived in St Day. He died in 1842, aged 57, of 'inflammation of the chest' death cert.  Mary is still living, as well as Caroline, Henry, Joseph, Elizabeth and Emily. James Jnr has moved on to Wales by then, to marry .

This is Gwennap Pit, a natural depression in the ground that was carved out to form an amphitheatre.  John Wesley used to preach her in the late 1700's, and on one occasion 20,000 people crowded into the pit to hear him.  (photo Nigel Hicks)

Generation No. 2

2. JAMES2 PASCOE (JAMES1) was born Abt. 1827 in Gwennap, Cornwall. He married JANE OWEN in Wales.

Notes for JAMES PASCOE:

James apparently moved to Wales some time between 1841 and 1850, where he married Jane Owen. He and Jane appear in the 1851 Glamorgan census living at Pentrepoeth with their daughter Margaret, born in 1850. He is a coal miner.

Living 2 doors away also in Pentrepoeth (1851 census) are William and Catherine Francis, both born in Gwennap. It seems probable that William is a cousin of James (whose mother's maiden name was Francis) - did James follow William to Glamorgan - better prospects?

6. JANE4 PASCOE (WILLIAM3, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born 1879 in Llangyfelach, Glamorgan. She married WILLIAM WILLIAMS. He was born Abt. 1880. My mother remembers Uncle Willy as a very kind man always there to help.

Child of JANE PASCOE and WILLIAM WILLIAMS is:

i. ELIZABETH5 WILLIAMS, b. Abt. 1910; d. Abt. 1990, Morriston.

Auntie Betty lived at 2 Vagwyr Place all her life. Her house smelled wonderful - a mixture of paraffin and ancient furniture. She showed me her shroud once, saved in mothballs in a big wooden chest for when it would be needed - white with a lot of lace.

Aunty Betty at the back of her house, holding (I think) David or Maldwyn

A lovely old lady, with a twitch in one eye, always used to write 'Brian' as 'Brain'. Vagwyr Place houses all had outside toilets, with newspaper neatly cut up and suspended from the wall with string. Auntie Betty helped Charlotte and her siblings a lot after their parents died. Her great friend was Mary Anne who lived a few doors away, and died of meningitis a few years before Aunty Betty.  I don't think 'Aunty' Mary Anne was a relative but she may have been.

7. MARY ANN4 CLARKE (CHARLOTTE3 PASCOE, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born March 18, 1893, and died June 18, 1934 in Morriston, Swansea. She married DAVID REES JONES March 24, 1913 in Morriston. He was born February 20, 1892 in Morriston (Midland Terrace), and died June 18, 1934 in Morriston, Swansea.
