4. DAVID REES4 JONES (THOMAS3, DAVID2, DAVID1) was born February 20, 1892 in Midland Terrace, Morriston, and died June 18, 1934 in Morriston. He married MARY ANNE CLARKE. She was born 1893, and died 1940.
Notes for DAVID REES JONES:
David was born in 1892 at Midland Terrace, Morriston.
He married Mary Ann Clarke in 1913, when he lived at 4 Midland Terrace. He was then a tinplate worker. George and William Carrow were the witnesses.
David and Mary Ann had their first child, Deborah about 7 months after their marriage, but she died (??of prematurity) the following day. Shortly after, David would have joined the Royal Navy when the 1st WW started, and they had no more children until the war ended.
David served in the Royal Navy during the 1st World War. His cap band suggests he was on HMS Paladin (although the last few letters are indistinct). This was an M-type Admiralty Destroyer, built in 1916 and scrapped 1921 (photo of vessel of same class below). HMS Paladin was attached to the 13th Destroyer Flotilla and probably carried out convoy duties as well as operating in the seas around Britain, although some were deployed to the Mediterranean or Far East. I think I remember Charlotte saying something about him being in very cold waters - this would imply his ship operated out of Scapa Flow.
After the war David worked in the tin works. The family were devastated by the death of Garfield from mastoiditis at the age of 15, in 1933. Charlotte remembers her father as tall, dark and handsome, and very kind. Charlotte remembers sitting on his knee and being made a fuss of. He liked a pint (or 3).
David died of cancer of the stomach with intrabdominal metastases, at the age or 41, in Swansea hospital, in the same bed that his son, Garfield had died the year previously. Charlotte was 8, and missed her father terribly, even when she had grown up she often used to speak of him. At the time of his death, David lived at 120 Clydach Rd (now Sway Rd) and was a tinplate rollerman. His death was notified by Uncle Willy of 2 Vagwyr Place.
Children of DAVID JONES and MARY CLARKE are:
i. DEBORAH5 JONES, b. October 19, 1913; d. October 20, 1913.
Notes for DEBORAH JONES:
Deborah could have died from prematurity, if conceived around the time of parents' marriage she would have been about 30 weeks: ie 10 weeks premature.
ii. GARFIELD JONES, b. 1918; d. 1933, Morriston.
Notes for GARFIELD JONES:
Garfield died from mastoiditis at the age of 15. The whole family was devastated. The doctor had misdiagnosed or neglected it and probably had he not, Garfield would have survived.
iii. BERYL JONES, b. 1920; m. TREVOR JONES who d. February 2000, Morriston Hospital.
Notes for BERYL JONES:
Garfield and Beryl, John and Charlotte used to go every week to Uncle Willy's for pocket money. The eldest two had 2 pence, the youngest 1 pence. Garfield and Beryl then used to give John and Charlotte a halfpenny each to make up their pocket money a bit so they could buy some sweets and go to the pictures, at the Odeon. At the cinema there was always great competition amongst the children to bring in the blind piano player and sit with him (these were the days of the silent movies). Bringing in the pianist meant free admission for the child, who then had to sit by him and tell him what sort of music he should play, as, being blind, he had no idea what was on screen. For example, when the cowboys came on this was the cue for him to play energetic cowboy music, and during the love scenes he would play sentimental stuff. When the children fancied causing chaos, they told him the wrong scenes and got thrown out.
Beryl and Trevor brought up Charlotte and Valerie after David and Mary Ann died.
iv. JOHN JONES, b. 1922, Morriston; d. 1984, Morriston.
Notes for JOHN JONES:
1984 of cancer of the bowel. John used to love to drive. When I went to visit Auntie Beryl and Uncle Trev he used to drive up on his Lambretta with a spare crash helmet to ask if I fancied a 'spin'. We went all over the Valleys. Later he bought a car. Beryl remembers one day John invited Beryl and Trevor for lunch. When they got there he suggested going instead to the airport restaurant instead of cooking at his place. They assumed he meant the local airport, but they actually ended up at Heathrow, and didn't get back till the early hours of the morning. When John started to drive he hated to stop and this used to cause Aunty Betty and Aunty Mary an awful lot of trouble because he wouldn't stop for them to eat, or go to the toilet. On long distances they used to try to persuade Beryl to go with them so she could tell him to stop. John never married, he used to spoil his nieces and nephews instead! John died 1984 of cancer of the bowel.
