JAMES2 ANDERSON (GEORGE1) was born Abt. 18352, and died 21 Aug 1867 in Woolwich. He married CATHARINE TURNER 20 Aug 1861 in Middleton Register Office, County Cork. Ireland No 303. She was born Abt. 1833 in White Bay, Cork, Ireland4, and died Aft. 18815.1861: The first mention I can find of James is his marriage in Cork, Ireland 1861, when he is a Gunner in the Royal Artillery. I think he was stationed there (there was a strong RA presence there, and his address was Carlisle, Cork - there was a fort at Carlisle. I don't know if he was Irish. He was about 26 then.
1862: James was stationed at Shoeburyness, Gunner in the Royal Artillery (cbc).
1867 James died of encephalitis after an illness of 3 weeks and was buried at Woolwich cemetery. He left Catharine with 2 young girls.

CATHARINE3 ANDERSON (JAMES2, GEORGE1) was born 30 Jul 1862 in Shoeburyness, Essex6, and died 03 Jan 1930 in Old Mill House, Fobbing, Essex7. She married THOMAS WILKINS 26 Oct 1891 in St Augustine Church, Haggerston, London8. He was born 31 Dec 1861 in Back St, Calne, and died 1941 in Thurrock9.Notes for C
ATHARINE ANDERSON:1862: Christened Sept 14th 1862 at South Shoebury. Parents James and Catherine, Royal Artillery.
1863: Sister Margaret born
1867: James died, buried Woolwich
1870: 16th Feb Catharine was admitted to the Orphan Working School, Haverstock Hill, Pancras, London. Her admission register (6129.1.267: Surrey History Centre) states that she is 7 years old, a 'bright child' but 'cannot do anything' under the subject terms of reading, writing, arithmetic and needlework. On her departure on July 27 1876 she is aged 14 years, her reading is 'very fair', arithmetic is 'moderate', needlework is 'fair' and general knowledge is 'very good'. She returned to her mother on leaving school. On admission to the school she signed her name as 'Cat' and on leaving as 'Kate Anderson'. This was done so that children could demonstrate their writing ability.
1871 census: At the Orphan Working School, aged 9. There is no record of her mother or sister on this census. They may have been staying with Catharine's family in Ireland.
1881 census: Now aged 19, visiting her aunt, Mary Ann Turvey - now married with a family, at 19 Freeschool St, Northampton All Sts, as follows:
Alfred Turvey, age 33, Railway Guard, born Buckingham 1848. Former Gunner in the RA at Woolwich (at the time of his marriage). Also interesting that Alfred is a railwayman, did Catharine meet Thomas Wilkins via him?
Mary Ann Turvey, 29, wife, born Ireland 1852. Is this Catharine senior's sister?
Sons Alfred and Michael, both born in Woolwich, age 8 and 6: 1873 and 1875
Daughter Julia, born Derby 1876
Father Charles, a widower, born Gawcott, Buckingham, 1819.
Catharine married in 1891, but there are some conflicts re the names of her children which vary between 1891 and 1901 censuses. It seems, however, she had two children by the time she married. Bud remembers a Tommy
1886: son George (or Thomas) born in Woolwich,
1888: son William born in Grays, Essex (or son George born in Plaistow)
1891 census: Catherine is living with Thomas in Thames Haven, Fobbing, with sons George and William, aged 5 and 3, born Woolwich and Grays.
1891: Oct Married Thomas Wilkins at Haggerston. Married from 22 Holms St. Witnesses: Thomas ?? Craig and Mary Smith.
1892: Son John born at 64, Upper Rd, Plaistow, West Ham.
1894 : Son Henry born at Southend Rd, Stanford le Hope
1901 census: Living at 30 Hadfield Rd, Stanford le Hope. Had probably moved back to Fobbing before 1923, as Henry's place of residence at the time of his marriage in 1923 was Fobbing.
1930 Died of a stroke, living at Old Mill House, Fobbing.
Bud remembers Catharine very vaguely, Bud would only have been about 2 when Catherine died. There is, however, a Scottish connection; Bud believes that Catherine had a Scots accent and Henry would take on a Scots accent at times. There were also a lot of relatives that Henry got in touch with in the 1940s, when he was told of them by his godmother, a Mrs Dyke (who Bud thinks lived near Southend).
