  PUTFORD (EAST) is a village and parish in Bideford union, containing by the census of 1861, 190 inhabitants and 2380 acres ; in the deanery of Hartland; archdeaconry of Barnstaple ; diocese of Exeter, hundred of Shebbear, North Devonshire ; 9 miles south-west from Great Torrington, and 12 south-west from Bideford. The living is a chapelry, annexed with Bulkworthy to the vicarage of Buckland Brewer, in the incumbency of the Rev Thomas Adams Colling, B.A., and the patronage of the crown. J.C. Moore Stevens, Esq., is lessee of the rectorial tithes. The church is an ancient edifice (dedication unknown), consisting of nave, chancel, and north transept, with a tower containing one bell. The Hon. Mark Rolle is lord of the manor, and he and the Rev. John Dayman, Thomas R. May, Esq., and Mrs. Buck, are the chief landowners.
