  CHARLETON is a village and parish in Kingsbridge union, containing, by the census of 1861, 568 inhabitants, and 2779 acres; in the deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Coleridge, East Devonshire; in two portions, east and west, the latter being 2 miles south of Kingsbridge. The rectory, in the incumbancy of the Rev. Thomas Twysden, M.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1840, at £557 per annum, with residence and 30A. 0R. 33P. of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Lady Ashburton. The church is a handsome edifice, dedicated to St. Mary, with tower and four bells; it was chiefly built, with the exception of the tower, in1849-50. There is a school for children of both sexes. Lady Ashburton is lady of the manor and chief landowner of the soil.

FROGMOOR* is a hamlet partly in this parish and partly in Sherford.

GOVETON is also a hamlet of this parish.
